ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – A resilient effort was turned in by the Henderson State women's basketball team on Thursday night in the Duke Wells Center as the Lady Reddies were able to weather a strong second half surge from Southeastern Oklahoma en route to picking up their first Great American Conference win of the season by a score of 77-69.
After missing their first six shots of the game and not scoring through the first four minutes of play, the Lady Reddies (3-1, 1-0 GAC) got on the board when
Destiny Smith made good on a layup to knot the game at 2-all. After that initial bucket, the Lady Reddies began to find the bottom of the net at an efficient clip. Their 50% (17-of-34) shooting in the first half helped the Lady Reddies build a 14-point lead, 43-29, heading into the break.
A layup by
Jill Temples on the Lady Reddies' first possession of the second half swelled their lead to its largest of the game, 16 points. The Lady Reddies would be able to maintain a double-digit lead through the first four minutes of the second half until Kayle Reaves' three-pointer pulled the Savage Storm (1-4, 0-1 GAC) to within 9 points, 48-39.
From there, the Storm would go on an 11-2 run to pull to within two points, 52-50. A quick 4-0 run by the Lady Reddies would extend their lead to six points, but Southeastern stormed back with a 9-2 run to capture a lead with 10:36 remaining in the game. The lead was the Savage Storm's first lead since the early minutes of the game.
The lead would change hands seven more times. During the back and forth, neither team would lead by more than two points. The final lead change would come at the 3:19 mark in the second half with the game knotted at 69-all as Smith's layup gave the Lady Reddies a two-point cushion. The Lady Reddies would then put the game away as they held the Storm off the scoreboard and eventually ended with an eight-point victory.
Smith led the team with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. The senior forward also led all players with 15 rebounds to record her second consecutive double-double. Classmate
Krystal Beachum was second on the team in scoring with 13 points. All 10 Lady Reddies to play scored at least one field goal.
The Lady Reddies will remain at home in conference play as they will play host to East Central University on Saturday, December 1st. Tip-off for the game is set for 2:00 pm in the Duke Wells Center.
