Reddies’ Comeback Effort Falls Short in Overtime

Box Score Box Score

MAGNOLIA, Ark.
– Trailing for much of the game, the Henderson State men's basketball team rallied to force overtime against Southern Arkansas on Saturday evening as Melvin Haynes hit a game-tying trifecta with six seconds remaining in the game. Haynes' three-pointer would be Henderson's final points of the game as they were unable to score in overtime, and eventually fell to Southern Arkansas by a score of 82-72.

The furious comeback by the Reddies (6-2, 2-2 GAC) started at the 10:07 mark in the second half as Denzel Lyles hit a three-pointer. On the game's previous possession, the Muleriders (5-3, 2-2 GAC) had swelled their lead to a pinnacle of 17 points, 64-47. Following Lyles' trey, the Reddies caught fire and went on a 19-6 run over the next 8:41 to pull to within one point, 70-69.

On Southern Arkansas' ensuing possession, Chris Davis hit a jumper with 36 seconds remaining in the game to put the Muleriders ahead by three points, 72-69. With the option of driving the lane for a quick score or trying for a game-tying three-pointer, the Reddies elected the latter as Lyles took the attempt. The shot would not fall for Lyles and SAU's Tevin Worthy came away with the big defensive rebound with 25 seconds remaining.

With the Reddies now needing to foul, the Muleriders successfully evaded each attempt, but a turnover by Davis with 14 seconds remaining gave the ball back to Henderson, who immediately took a timeout to draw up a play. The play head coach Doug Nichols designed got Melvin Haynes a game-tying look from the wing and the junior guard nailed it to tie the game at 72-all. SAU would still have a chance for a game-winner as Davis got off a good look from beyond the arc as the clock expired but the attempt would be no good, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Reddies went cold from the floor as they did not score a point and missed all six of their shots, including four attempts from long range. Conversely, the Muleriders got hot in the extra period, scoring 10 points as they hit four of their six shot attempts en route to an 82-72 win.

Three Reddies scored in double figures with Lyles and Andrew Ensley leading the way with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Haynes would add 16 points, which were highlighted by four three-pointers.

The Reddies will remain on the road as they look to break their current two-game skid. They will next be in action on Saturday, December 15th as they will travel to take on Union University with a tip-off scheduled for 4:00 pm.
