After dropping both games on the opening day of the 2012 Henderson State University Softball Classic, Henderson State rebounded on Saturday with a 7-1 win over Rockhurst University and a wild 15-11 win over Delta State University at Dee White Field.
Compared to the back-and-forth display of offense between Henderson State and Delta State in the night-cap, the first game of the day for the Lady Reddies (3-3) against Rockhurst was rather uneventful. Both teams were held scoreless until the Lady Reddies broke through in the top of the fourth inning. HSU played as the visiting team after Rockhurst won the coin-toss prior to the game and elected to play as the home team.
In that fourth inning, HSU's
Brittnie Dean led off with a double to left field. She would remain there until
Hali Kizer platted her on a two-out RBI single towards the shortstop. The Lady Reddies would pick up another run in the fifth inning on an
Amber Klug sacrifice fly to left field. Down 2-0, Rockhurst would pick up their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI double by Sadie Applegate.
A three-spot in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh gave HSU starting pitcher
Melissa Decker all the run support she would need as the senior right-hander tossed another gem with a complete-game two-hitter. The one blemish on Decker's stat line was the one earned run.
The Lady Reddies would have a game off before squaring off with Delta in what turned out to be an unbelievable display of offense between the two teams. Prior to their game with the Lady Reddies, the Lady Statesmen (2-2) took on Missouri Western State University and came away with a loss in that game after sweeping their two games on Friday.
HSU started the offensive fireworks as their bats came out red-hot. The Lady Reddies teed off on Delta starting pitcher Brittany Gonzalez to the tune of three runs on five hits in the first inning alone. DSU would answer right back however in their half of the inning as they matched the Lady Reddies' three-run output on four hits. The big blow came on a three-run homerun by Ashleigh Allgood. Overshadowed by the game-tying homerun was a tremendous show of sportsmanship by the Henderson State players as they assisted Brook Cline to home plate after she lay injured at second base following the homerun.
The game would remain tied at three-all until Delta picked up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. A Lady Reddie three-run homerun to left center off the bat of
Brittnie Dean knotted the game at 6-all. The Lady Reddies would jump back in front the next inning on a RBI single to left field by
Sarah Gipson. Two more runs in the top of the seventh gave HSU a 9-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Similar to the first game, HSU played as the visiting team.
With two on and no one out in the bottom of the seventh Delta's Taylor Hughes launched a three-run homerun to center field to tie the game up once again, this time at 9-all. It was the third three-run homerun of the game between the two teams. The game-tying homerun came off of Decker who came on in relief of starter
Kasey Carlock. Decker would escape the inning sending the game to extras and putting the Softball International Tie-Breaker Procedure back into effect.
Just as the Lady Reddies started the game with hot bats, they ended the game with even hotter bats. In that eighth inning, HSU hammered out five hits and scored six runs. The offensive muscle was first flexed by
Amber Klug as she belted a two-run bomb to left field.
Now with a six-run cushion, Decker would re-enter the circle looking to pick up her second win of the day. A pair of RBI groundouts and strikeout would end the Lady Statesmen threat and sealed the wild win for Decker and the Lady Reddies.
On the day, eight Lady Reddies picked up three or more hits. Dean had the most impressive day at the plate going 5-for-9 with a homerun and five RBIs.
The Lady Reddies will play two more games on Sunday against Missouri S&T and Missouri Western to conclude the three-day classic.
