A day after dropping their first two conference games of the season to cross-street rival Ouachita Baptist, the Henderson State Softball team avoided a four-game sweep as they picked up a 4-3 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Sully Anderson Field.
The Lady Reddies (8-9, 1-3 GAC) were forced into the situation of having to fight off the series-sweep after they fell to the Lady Tigers (7-6, 3-1 GAC) in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday by a score of 2-0. Both Lady Tiger runs were earned and charged to Lady Reddie starter
Melissa Decker. Decker would be saddled with the loss after working six full innings. In her time in the circle, Decker gave up six hits, walked three, and struck out four batters.
Game two saw the Lady Reddies jump ahead of OBU quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-out double by junior catcher
Amber Klug. Neither team would score until the fifth inning. In the top half of that inning, HSU's
Brittnie Dean blasted a solo homerun and Klug picked up another RBI on a double, this time chasing home
Katey Gorsage who doubled prior to Klug's at-bat.
Now down 4-0, the Lady Tigers platted three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Lady Reddie starter
Kasey Carlock to cut HSU's lead to a single run, 4-3. Carlock would escape the inning with the slim lead.
Following the rough fifth inning, Carlock would settle down and pitched perfect innings in the sixth and seventh to close out the win for the Lady Reddies. That fifth inning proved to be the lone blemish on Carlock's afternoon as she finished the game giving up just four hits, striking out five, and walking one in her seven complete innings of work.
The Lady Reddies will continue Great American Conference play as they will play host to Arkansas Tech University for a four-game set. The first game is set for Saturday, March 3rd with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
