Lady Reddies Back to Winning Ways

Marred in a season-long six-game losing streak, the Henderson State Women's Basketball team got back in the win column on Thursday evening with a 69-52 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

The Lady Reddies (12-9, 6-5 GAC) jumped all over the visiting Savage Storm (9-12, 5-6 GAC) by starting the game on a 19-0 run. During that run, HSU made good on nine of their first 11 shots from the field while SEOSU was 0-for-11. It was not until the 12:31 mark in the first half that the Storm got on the board. After their first bucket, they rattled off seven more unanswered points to close the gap to 10 points, 19-9. That would be the closest the Storm would come in the first half as the Lady Reddies went into the locker room with an 18-point lead, 38-20.

In that first half, the Lady Reddies were nearly lights out shooting the ball. They finished the half shooting 16-of-28 (57 percent) from the floor, and were even better from long range knocking down 5-of-8 (63 percent). Cheree Freeman and Sheay Longstaff were responsible for all but one of the makes from beyond the arc as each hit 2-of-3.

Opening up the second half was a trey by Longstaff to give the Lady Reddies a 21-point lead, which was their largest of the game. The Storm would cut the lead to single digits on a couple of occasions, but HSU was still able to cruise to a 17-point victory, 69-52. It was the first time this season that the Lady Reddies have won a game without scoring at least 70 points.

Four Lady Reddies ended in double-figures with Freeman's 17-point effort leading the team. Longstaff added 11 points. Crystal Harrison and Krystal Beachum each contributed 10 points. Beachum also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Shillallie Jones ran the point for the Lady Reddies and dished out six helpers while coming away with three steals.

The Lady Reddies look to build upon this win as they will travel to Monticello, Ark. for a pivotal conference game against the Cotton Blossoms on Saturday, February 11th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
