Collecting consecutive wins to close out the regular season, the Henderson State Women's Basketball team earned the No. 5 seed in the inaugural Great American Conference Women's Basketball Tournament and drew an opening round matchup with the No. 4 seed Harding University on Friday night at the Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla.
Just six days prior, the Lady Reddies (14-13) beat Harding by a score of 68-51 in the regular season finale at the Duke Wells Center, but were unable to replicate the feat as they fell to the Lady Bison (17-10) by a final score of 78-52.
A cold shooting effort (27 percent) by Henderson State combined with a hot shooting performance (56 percent) by Harding in the first half put HSU into a hole they would not be able to pull out of. A 13-3 run over the first five minutes of the game gave the Lady Bison an early double-digit advantage. Harding would grow their first half lead to as much as 20 points as they led 40-20 heading into the locker room.
Harding, by way of 20 made free throws and 44-percent shooting from the floor in the second half was able to sustain their lead and eventually cruised to a 26-point win.
The Lady Reddies would be led in scoring by senior forward Crystal Harrison who would finish with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor. Joining Harrison with double figures in scoring was classmate Cheree Freeman. The 2011-12 All-GAC Second Team selection scored 10 points in the game and was 4-of-5 from the charity stipe. Destiny Smith led the team in rebounds with six in the game.
Henderson State ends the 2011-12 season with a 14-13 overall record.
