After winning both ends of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, the Henderson State Softball team secured the series win as they split Sunday afternoon's doubleheader against Arkansas Tech with a 3-1 win in the first game and a 5-1 loss in the second game at Dee White Field.
The first game of the afternoon featured a very good pitching matchup as HSU's
Melissa Decker went up against reigning GAC Pitcher of the Week Rachel Keeton. Decker would be touched up first as she gave up the game's initial run on a two-out RBI single in the third inning. That run-scoring single was also the first hit that Decker had given up to that point.
A pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Keeton would give the Lady Reddies (11-10, 4-4 GAC) the lead. Now pitching with the lead, Decker would scatter two hits in the fifth and sixth innings to maintain the slim cushion. A sacrifice fly off the bat of pinch-hitter
Miranda Vest in the bottom of the sixth inning added an insurance run.
The Golden Suns (8-8, 4-4 GAC) threatened to tie the game with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as they had put two runners in scoring position. Decker would induce a harmless fly ball to her left fielder
Katey Gorsage to end the game and in the process picked up her second straight complete game victory in the circle. In seven innings of work, the senior right-hander would scatter five hits, strike out three, and give up the one earned run.
Game two saw the Golden Suns capitalize on three Henderson errors as they staved off the four-game sweep by winning the second game, 5-1. Four of the runs were off of starter
Stephanie Johnson, but only one of those runs was earned. The big inning for the Golden Suns came in the top of the fourth inning as they platted three runs, of which none were earned, and took a 4-0 lead.
HSU would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI triple by
Laura Beth Ray, but were limited to that one run. Throughout the game, the Lady Reddies would have chances to score. Despite the Lady Reddie traffic on the base paths, they were unable to collect the clutch hit as the Lady Reddies' lineup would strand nine base runners in the game.
The Lady Reddies will now travel to Mount Pleasant, Texas to take on Texas Women's University on Tuesday, March 6th for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
