Lady Reddies Dealt Setback against Texas Women’s University

Playing on the road Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader, the Henderson State Softball team was handed a pair of losses by the Texas Women's University softball team, 9-1 in five innings and 2-0.

Facing stout pitching in both games, the Lady Reddies (11-12, 4-4 GAC) would plate their lone run of the afternoon in the top of the second inning. To lead off that inning, HSU catcher Amber Klug singled to center field. A sacrifice bunt followed by a single by Hali Kizer would move Klug to third base. Klug would then come around to score to give the Lady Reddies an early 1-0 lead on an infield bunt single by Laura Beth Ray.

TWU would answer back in a big way as they put together consecutive big offensive innings in the bottom of the third and fourth. Between those two innings, the Pioneers (17-4) scored nine runs on 10 hits. All of the Pioneer runs were earned and charged to HSU's Melissa Decker, who fell to 6-5 on the year.

Game two would not feature nearly as much offensive firepower by the Pioneers, but saw them pick up a timely hit in the bottom of the third inning to score the game's only two runs. In the circle for the Lady Reddies in game two was Kasey Carlock. The junior right-hander pitched well despite the final decision as she worked six complete innings, gave up just three hits and struck out seven while allowing the two earned runs. Carlock's opposition in the circle surrendered just one hit in the game, which did not come until the top of the seventh inning when Klug singled to center field.

The Lady Reddies will look to rebound from the pair of setbacks as they will travel to Durant, Okla. over the weekend to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State University in GAC play. The four-game set is scheduled to start on Saturday, March 10th with first pitch being at 1:00 p.m.
