Game 2 Box Score
In the midst of a season-long 10-game losing streak, the Henderson State softball team got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon at Dee White Field with a pair of wins over visiting Southern Arkansas University by scores of 6-4 and 2-1.
A perfect top of the first inning by HSU starting pitcher
Melissa Decker brought the Lady Reddies' (17-28, 9-17 GAC) to bat in the bottom half, and four hits and four runs later, Decker was staked to an early 4-0 lead. Sophomore third baseman
Brittnie Dean led things off in the inning with a double to left field. Freshman
Amy Halter followed with a bunt base hit and advanced to second on a throwing error. The error also allowed Dean to score the first run of the game. With two on and one out,
Katey Gorsage hit a double to center field to score Halter. Following the Gorsage double,
Amber Wilburn drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle.
Southern Arkansas would get two runs back in the top of the second inning on a two-run homerun by Macie Tillery off of Decker. The senior right-hander would get out the inning without surrendering another run to keep the Lady Reddies out in front, 4-2.
An RBI triple by Halter and a RBI single by
Ashley Ray in the bottom of the second inning gave the Lady Reddies a four-run cushion once more, 6-2. Decker would give up just one hit over the next three innings before the Lady Riders (20-29, 7-15 GAC) platted two more runs on a two-RBI single up the middle by Tillery. A bases loaded hit by pitch of
Amber Klug in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Decker a three-run lead, 7-4, heading into the final inning. Decker would retire the side in order to collect her eighth win of the season.
The night cap was classic pitcher's duel. HSU got on the board first in the fourth inning when
Gina Guajardo had a two-RBI single up the middle that scored pinch runners,
Ellie McMahen and Emily Halter. Southern Arkansas would score their only run off of game two starter
Kasey Carlock in the top of the fifth inning. The junior right-hander would pitch perfect innings in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the one-run lead and gave the Lady Reddies the sweep in Saturday's doubleheader.
The Lady Reddies will wrap up their 2012 regular season on Sunday, April 15th with another doubleheader against Southern Arkansas. First pitch is set for noon on Sunday. The twin-bill will also serve as the Lady Reddies' Senior Day as they will honor the outstanding careers of a pair of seniors in
Melissa Decker and
Ashley Ray.
