Senior’s Decker and Ray Lead Lady Reddies to Sweep on Senior Day

Game 1 Box Score -- Game 2 Box Score

Sunday was Senior Day at Dee White Field as the Henderson State Lady Reddie Softball team honored the three seniors on this year's team. The two seniors who have been four-year fixtures in the program played major roles in the doubleheader sweep over Southern Arkansas as Melissa Decker pitched a complete-game, two-hitter in the opening game and Ashley Ray hit a go-ahead two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game.

Toeing the rubber in the circle for the final time at Dee White Field, Decker was sharp all game long. Her one mistake came in the top of the first inning after she surrendered a two-run homerun. The only other hit she would give up on the day was a harmless single through the left side of the infield. After a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Reddies (19-28, 11-17 GAC) took the lead in the third inning with three runs scored which were highlighted by a Katey Gorsage two-RBI double.

The offense did not stop there as the Lady Reddies platted three more runs in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead. Gorsage, who picked up another RBI in the fourth inning, came to bat in the bottom of the sixth with Amber Klug on first base and with one out. The junior left fielder then ended the game with a two-run blast to right center field to give the Lady Reddies an 11-2 victory. For the game, Gorsage drove in five runs.

Contrary to the first game, offense was at a premium in the second game. Only five hits were collected between the two teams for the game and the first hit until the top of the fourth inning when SAU's Macie Tillery hit a solo homerun to centerfield off of HSU starting pitcher Kasey Carlock. That would prove to be the lone blemish on Carlock's stat line as she surrendered just one more hit in the game.

Held off the base paths through the first four innings of play, Gorsage drew a one out walk to end the perfect game bid. Ellie McMahen would come on to pinch run for Gorsage and eventually came home for the tying run on an infield single to second base by Sarah Gipson.

With one on and one out in a 1-1 tie game in the bottom of the sixth Ashley Ray came to bat for the last time at Dee White Field. Her final at-bat will be one of her most memorable at bats as Ray took the first pitch she saw deep to left field for a two-run go-ahead homerun. Carlock would pitch a scoreless top of the seventh inning to preserve the win and clinch the four-game series sweep over Southern Arkansas.

The Lady Reddies will now wait to find out their seeding in the upcoming inaugural Great American Conference Softball Tournament. The tournament is set to begin on Thursday, April 26th.
