Henderson State scored three runs in the second-inning and held off Missouri Western as the Lady Reddies beat the Griffons 4-3 at the Southeastern Shootout in Durant, Okla.
The Lady Reddies lost to Angelo State earlier in the day 7-2. Sunday's games were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Against Missouri Western,
Alison Waggoner and
Amy Halter had two hits each to lead the Lady Reddies.
Waggoner led off Henderson's big second-inning with a single and then stole second base.
Laura Beth Ray then plated Waggoner for Henderson's first run of the game with a hard-hit single to left field.
With one-out,
Laura Mabary reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a MWSU throwing error which allowed Ray to score. Mabary later scored on a base-hit by Halter as HSU took a 3-0 lead.
Missouri Western scored runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the Lady Reddie lead to 3-2 before Henderson added an insurance run in the seventh. With two-outs,
Katey Gorsage reached on an error and scored on a double by
Amber Wilburn.
The Griffons threatened in the seventh-inning scoring a run in the inning before
Kayla Williams was able to get Tiffany Gillaspy to fly out to Halter to end the game.
Amy Halter ended the tournament going 7-for-16 in the four games, while both
Katey Gorsage and
Sarah Gipson going 5-for-14 with Gibson having three runs batted in and Gorsage two RBI.
Henderson State will travel to Bentonville, Ark. next weekend to participate in the University of Arkansas-Monticello Invitational.
The Lady Reddies will face Central Missouri and Emporia State on Friday, before taking on Fort Hays State and Missouri Western on Saturday. Henderson will end the three-day event on Sunday against Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Baptist.
