Box Score Henderson State accomplished a feat no other team has been able to do this season as the Reddies beat Harding 70-68 at the Rhodes Field House in Searcy, Ark. Thursday night.
Harding, 17-6 overall and 10-4 in the Great American Conference, entered the night having won all 12 games on its home floor.
Henderson State, 11-10 and 6-9, stunned the home crowd by upsetting the first-place Bisons with the help of strong rebounding and solid free throw shooting. It was the first time Henderson has beaten the Bisons in Searcy since 2007.
Henderson built a 41-32 halftime lead as the Reddies ended the half going on a 16-3 run with
Melvin Haynes hitting back-to-back 3-point field goals. The Henderson defense gave the Bisons trouble as Harding managed just one field goal in the final five minutes of the half.
After shooting nearly 50 percent from the field in the first-half, the Reddies struggled in the second-half making just 7-of-20 shots against a stingy Bison defense.
With Harding leading 63-62 following a free throw by Zach Roddenberry with 2:39 left in the game, Haynes gave the Reddies the lead for good just 6 seconds later with a trifecta.
With 26 seconds remaining and the Reddies leading 69-66, Roddenberry hit a pair of free throws to cut the Harding deficit to a single point.
Andrew Ensley was then sent to the foul line 10 seconds later and Ensley hit one of two attempts. Harding had one last chance, but Henderson's defense came up big as the Bisons were unable to drive inside forcing Bradley Spencer to throw up a 3-point field goal that was off target.
Haynes led Henderson State with 20 points, while Ensley totaled 14 points to go along with 8 rebounds.
Taylor Smith added 10 points for the Reddies while
Matt Nicholson pulled down eight key rebounds.
Johnson led Harding with 18 points with Roddenberry adding 17.
Henderson State ended the game shooting 43 percent from the field converting on 23-of-53 attempts, while Harding was 21-of-41 from the field for 51 percent.
Henderson State will next play host to Arkansas Tech on Saturday with tipoff set for 4 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
