Henderson State banged out 14 hits as the Lady Reddies beat Arkansas Tech 9-5 in the opening round of the Great American Conference Tournament, Thursday in Bentonville, Ark.
The win was Henderson's first opening round victory in a conference tournament since 2007.
Sarah Gipson set the pace for Henderson State as the sophomore first baseman hit a two-run home run in the first-inning.
Henderson State, 21-30 on the season, added a run in the second-inning and four more in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead before ATU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams score two runs in the seventh.
Eight Lady Reddies had hits with
Morgan South and
Katie Hulan both going 3-for-4 in the game.
Laura Mabary,
Amy Halter,
Hali Kizer and Hulan all had doubles, with Mabary driving in two runs and Halter one.
Playing with a heavy heart after the passing of a former teammate at Texas Woman's University,
Kayla Williams pitched a complete-game to improve to 12-13 on the season.
Williams also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.
The Lady Reddies will next face East Central Oklahoma at 6 p.m. tonight.
