Box Score Darius Davis had three touchdown receptions and the Henderson State defense limited Arkansas Tech to 192 yards of offense as the Reddies beat the Wonder Boys 24-3, Saturday in Russellville, Ark.
The No. 6 Reddies improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the Great American Conference.
Davis, Henderson's all-time leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, caught four passes for 181 yards including touchdown receptions of 56, 68 and 58 yards, all in the first-half.
Kevin Rodgers hooked up with Davis for a 56-yard strike at the 12:58 mark in the opening quarter to put the Reddies on top 7-0.
The Reddie defense forced Arkansas Tech to punt on its opening possession, to set up Davis' second touchdown reception on the third play of the drive to increase the Reddie lead to 14-0 with 8:30 left in the first quarter.
After a Randy Velazquez provided Arkansas Tech with its only points of the game by knocking through a 45-yard field, Rodgers and Davis connected for a third time to begin the second quarter to make the score 21-3 with 14:33 left in the half.
Arkansas Tech, 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the GAC, managed to move the ball inside the Reddie 15 twice but came up empty both times.
Glennon Bobo tackled Justyn Oliphant for a four-yard loss and
Chris King later broke up a Devin Robertson pass on 4th-and-goal.
Later in the half, Robertson broke free for a 25-yard run down to the Reddie 2, before
Kenrick Burns came up with a touchdown saving tackle for the Reddies.
Burns' defensive play was big as
Blake Lopez tackled Keltin Smith for a four-yard loss followed by a holding penalty which would force Tech to attempt a field goal.Â
Velazquez's 30-yard attempt was wide left and the score stood at 21-3 at the break.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second-half with the lone score being a
Houston Ray 40-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.
"I was not pleased with our offense," said head coach Scoot Maxfield. "We didn't block well, there was too much pressure on the quarterback, and we have to run the ball better."
Henderson's defense dominated the second-half as the Wonder Boys totaled just 42 yards in the final 30 minutes. In addition, ATU had eight possessions in the half with the
Henderson defense holding Tech to 3-and-out or less six times.
"I thought our defense did a great job," Maxfield said. "I am proud their performance. We just need to get the offense to get better and put it all together."
Rodgers went over the 300-yard mark for the 23rd time in his career totaling 325 yards on 21-of-36 passing. The Reddie signal-caller now has 12,120 career passing yards, eighth all-time in NCAA Division II history.
Henderson totaled just 53 yards rushing in the game, with
Rodney Bryson leading the way with 38 yards on 13 carries.
Arkansas Tech ended with -4 yards rushing as the Reddie defense totaled a season-best 12 tackles for lost yardage including 7 quarterback sacks.
Dijon Benton had a season-best 11 tackles including 1 ½ sacks to lead the Reddie defense.
Donovan McLeod had eight tackles with a tackle for a loss and interception.
Bobo and
Trevon Del Rio both had 2 ½ tackles for loss with Bobo also having a pair of quarterback hurries. Bobo now has 41 career tackles for lost yardage, nine behind Terry Rodgers who holds the HSU record with 50.
Henderson State will return to Arkadelphia for Homecoming next Saturday as the Reddies play host to Harding with kickoff set for 3 p.m. at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.
