HSU BASKETBALL OPENS GAC PLAY THURSDAY

The Henderson State men's and women's basketball teams will open Great American Conference play on Thursday against Southeastern Oklahoma at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.
 
The women's game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
 
For the first time since the 2009-10 season, all of Henderson State's GAC games will be broadcast on ESPN 106.9 FM in Arkadelphia and Southwest Arkansas.
R.J. Hawk (@RJHawk) will provide all the play-by-play of Henderson State basketball with color commentary being provided by an assortment of talent including HSU Director of Athletics Shawn Jones (@ReddiesAD), Athletics Media Relations Director Troy Mitchell (@MitchellHSU), and Athletics Media Relations Assistant Hunter Lively (@HLively).
The pregame show will air 15 minutes prior to game time.
 
The Henderson State women's team enters Thursday's matchup with a 1-1 record following an 82-76 win over Texas-A&M-Commerce on Monday
 
The Reddies returns four players from last year's team including the league leading scorer in Aungelique Sledge, who averaged 19.6 points per game.
 
Sledge is averaging 19.0 points per game after two games this season while pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game.
 
In the win over the Lions, five players scored in double-figure with Sledge leading the way with 20 points.
 
Along with Sledge's performance, Haleigh Henson scored 13 points with Dulincia Keener scoring 12. Deidra McCoy and Annie Thomas scored 10 points each with McCoy grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma is 3-0 on the year after an 87-49 victory over Arlington Baptist. The Storm is averaging 71.7 points per game and have made an astounding 37 three-point field goals in just three games.
 
Emily Williams leads the Storm averaging 15.3 points per game followed by Olivia Potter at 12.7 per contest.
 
Against Arlington Baptist, Potter turned in a career-high 26 points off the bench shooting 9-12 from the floor and 8-10 from behind the arc, finishing one three point basket shy of the GAC record for threes in a game.
 
Henderson's men's team is 1-1 record on the season following a 65-61 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville last Saturday.
 
Henderson State has nine returning players including three starters in Taylor Smith, Kevin Kozan and Reggie Murphy.
 
Smith averaged 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season. The senior from Kensett, Ark. also shot 45 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. So far this season, Smith is averaging 11.5 points per contest.
 
Kozan led the team with 62 3-point field goals and averaged 9.1 points per game as a freshman. The product of New Lenox, Ill. is averaging 9.5 points this year after a 19-point performance on Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
 
Murphy leads the Reddies in scoring averaging 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Murphy averaged 10.5 points and a team-best 5.8 rebounds per game a year ago.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma comes to Arkadelphia with a 1-2 record on the year. The Storm finished 9-18 last season and had a 6-14 record in GAC play.     


Danny Powell leads the Storm in scoring averaging 18.3 points per game including a 24 point outing against Arlington Baptist.
 
Sami Bzai scored 20 points last time out against Arlington Baptist and is averaging 16.7 points per contest. Bzai has converted on 10-of-16 3-point field goals for a percentage of 62.5.
 
Darius Harris is a force inside averaging 11.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. Harris opened the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 19 rebounds against Central Oklahoma.
 
Henderson State leads the all-time series against Southeastern Oklahoma having a 9-5 record over the Savage Storm. The series is even at 3-3 since the two teams began playing as part of the Great American Conference.
 
Henderson State will be attempting to win its 300th game since becoming a member of NCAA Division II prior to the 1993-94 season. The Reddies have a 299-249 record as a NCAA Division II member.
