Box Score 2 The Henderson State softball team opened the 2015 season with a pair of tough losses to Delta State, losing 9-8 and 6-4 on Saturday in Cleveland, Miss.
Amy Halter led the Reddies going 6-for-8 with a triple and four runs scored in the twin bill.
Sarah Gipson had three hits in the double-header including a double, home run and three runs batted in.
Ashlyn White and Kiersten Seahorn each had two hits for Henderson, with both having home runs.
It would take extra-innings for the first game to be decided as Delta State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 9th to win.
Henderson opened the game taking a 2-0 lead as Morgan hit a two-run double to left-center field after Halter and White both reached on singles.
Delta State, however, responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning as the Statesmen put together five hits in the frame.
The Reddies took a 5-4 lead in the third-inning with the help of Gipson's two-run home run, and a solo blast by Seahorn.
Henderson added unearned runs in both the fifth and sixth frames, but Delta State scored three runs to tie the score at 7-7.
Gipson gave HSU the lead in the eighth on a RBI single that drove home Halter who singled and stole second.
Delta State would respond with a run in the bottom of the frame to force another extra-inning before winning the game.
In game two, the Statesmen built a 4-1 lead before the Reddies scored three runs in the fifth-inning to tie the game at 4-4 as White provided a home run in the frame.
Delta State would plate a pair of runs in the fifth-inning and would then hold off the Reddies in the final two innings.
Henderson State will play its home opener on Friday when the Reddies take on Missouri Western at Noon and Lincoln at 2 p.m. at Dee White Field.
