Box Score 2 In a series in which offense was at a premium, Henderson State split a double-header with Southern Nazarene in Great American Conference softball action, Saturday in Bethany, Okla.
Southern Nazarene won game one 9-8 in eight innings, before the Reddies blasted the Crimson Storm 18-7 in the series finale. Despite the Saturday split, Henderson State won the series after sweeping a double-header on Friday.
There were plenty of fireworks in the four-game series with the teams combining for 71 runs on 97 hits including 24 extra-base hits.
Henderson totaled 35 hits on Saturday compared to 20 for SNU with
Sarah Gipson leading the way going 6-fo-10 including a double, home run and four RBI.
The senior from Grand Saline, Texas collected her 200th career hit in her first at bat of the day becoming only the second player in school history to eclipse the milestone.
Keirsten Seahorn was 5-for-8 with five runs batted in, while
Taylor Daniels was 5-for-11 having a double, home run and five runs driven in.
Henderson State, 24-8 overall and 14-6 in the Great American Conference, led 5-1 through three innings in the opener before SNU scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and another run in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.
Trailing by three runs in the seventh, the Reddies rallied to tie the score at 8-8 as
Amy Halter and Gipson both singled before Daniels blasted a three-run homer.
SNU would load the bases in the eighth-inning and would score the winning run on a fielder's choice.
In the finale, Henderson State would trail 4-3 until tying the score in the fourth on a Seahorn RBI single.
The Reddies would have a huge fifth-inning scoring six runs putting together six hits including a double by
Tricia Hock, a triple by
Ashlyn White and singles by Gipson, Seahorn,
Morgan South and
Courtney Warren.
SNU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-7, but Henderson's offense was too much for the Crimson Storm as the Reddies scored three more runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh.
Gipson had a two-run single in the sixth with White driving home Gipson on her base hit to right field.
Seahorn's two-run double in the seventh and RBI singles by Warren and White gave Henderson plenty of insurance to win the series. Â
Ali Hargis pitched 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win to improve to 5-0 on the year. White pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and retired seven straight batters to finish the game.
