HSU Softball Travels to UAM 8 States Classic in Bentonville

Henderson State will travel to Bentonville, Ark. on Thursday to compete in the UAM 8 States Classic softball tournament.

The Reddies(4-2) will take on Emporia State and Truman State on Friday, with game times set for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

HSU will be taking on Emporia for the third time this season, after defeating the Hornets last weekend in Oklahoma by scores of 3-1 and 1-0.

Truman State was picked to finish third in the Great Lake Valley Conference, and will be some of the strongest competition HSU will face this season.

In the first game against ESU, transfer Madison Calvert surrendered five hits and struck out two batters while picking up her first victory of the year in the Reddies' season opener.

Both teams had six hits in that game, as Morgan South led Henderson State going 2-for-3 in the game.

In game two vs. Emporia, Michelle Sorensen pitched a no-hitter, as the sophomore from Sherwood, Ark. struck out nine batters in the process to improve to 2-1 on the year.

On Saturday, the Reddies will have a matchup first with Wayne State at 9 a.m. followed by a game against Pittsburg State at 1 p.m.

Pittsburg State recently defeated the Reddies last weekend 5-0, and is picked to finish second in the MIAA Conference this season.

To round out the tournament, HSU takes on Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by a tilt with Central Missouri for the second time this season at 3 p.m.

The Reddies defeated UCM 6-4 last weekend, in a strong pitching game from the Reddies as Sorensen exited after allowing just two hits and striking out two hitters.

Ashlyn White came in and struck out two of the four batters she faced against the Jennies to pick up her second save of the season and secure the win for Sorensen.

On the season, Courtney Warren leads HSU with a .429 hitting percentage, recording three hits and an RBI in seven at-bats last weekend.

Jordan Griffith, Caroline Cullins, and South all lead HSU with four hits through the first six games, while White leads all Reddies with three RBI.

From the circle, both Calvert and Sorensen sport 2-1 records while White has recorded two saves and surrendered just one hit.
