HSU to Face SE Okla. in Opening Round of GAC Tournament

The Henderson State softball team returns to the Great American Conference Tournament in Bentonville as the #6 seed, taking on #3 seeded Southeastern Oklahoma at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

HSU, a winner in seven of its last 10 contests, finished the regular season with a 32-24 overall record and 23-21 GAC record.

The Reddies come into the contest off a 3-1 series victory at Oklahoma Baptist to finish off the regular season, while Southeastern Oklahoma finished the season with a 2-2 series split at Arkansas-Monticello last weekend.

SE Okla. comes in with a 29-21 overall and 25-15 GAC record, and swept the Reddies during the regular season in a four-game series in Durant, Okla.

This season, Ashlyn White led Henderson with a .379 batting average, and hit at a .397 average against tournament teams.

White has 15 home runs on the season while also leading the conference in walks, and needs just one homer to break the record for most home runs in a single season in HSU history.

In HSU's last ten games, freshman first baseman Hope Patterson has provided a huge spark for the Reddie offensive attack, holding a .444 batting average and cranking out 12 hits including three home runs.

Against the Savage Storm this season, Ashleigh Erb led the Reddies going 3-for-6, while Morgan South held a .444 average going 4-for-9 including three RBI and one home run.

Sophomore catcher Courtney Warren leads HSU with 60 hits on the year to go along with 16 doubles and 40 runs scored.

Keirsten Seahorn is second on the team collecting 54 hits, and has also cranked out seven homers.

From the circle, Michelle Sorensen has proved to be Henderson's most efficient pitcher holding a 19-10 record and 2.37 ERA, while Madison Calvert is 12-12 on the season with a 3.71 ERA.

SOSU is led by Jessica Simmons, who leads the GAC with a .474 batting average, with 74 hits and five home runs.

Sydney Kramer and Laramie Beal have also had impressive seasons with .353 and .352 averages, respectively.

Last season, HSU finished in the GAC Tournament as runners-up, falling in the championship game to East Central.

"I think we're very prepared this time around," head coach Beth Jackson said. "During the regular season we out-hit SOSU three-of-four times, and I believe we are much more focused and experienced now heading into Thursday morning's game."
