Reddie Tennis Begins Spring Season on Friday Against Tarleton State

The Henderson State women's tennis team will begin the spring schedule with three home matches starting with a 2 p.m. tilt on Friday against Tarleton State at the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center.
The weekend continues with a match against Southwest Baptist on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a 10 a.m. contest against Delta State on Sunday.

The Reddies are led by junior Annie Shannon who ranks No. 10 in the latest NCAA Central Region rankings.

Shannon earned Great American Conference Tennis Player of the Year honors last season after finishing the year with a 16-2 record overall at No. 1 singles.

Maddie McJunkins is Henderson's lone senior. The product of Nashville, Ark. earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors last year. McJunkins played in three singles matches and was 3-0 a year ago.

Also returning for the Reddies are Mariah Bartlett, Alexandra Cuello and Alisha Davis.

Bartlett finished her freshman season with a 10-10 record including a 3-4 mark in GAC play, while Cuello posted a 5-11 overall singles record including a 3-4 record against GAC competition.

Newcomers to the squad include Lorraine Banimataku, Thea Minor and Lauren Miller.

Banimataku was 10-8 in singles play at New Mexico Military Institute. Minor also attended NMMI and played No. 1 singles as a sophomore recording a 10-10 record including wins over three ranked opponents.

Banimataku and Minor played No. 1 doubles together at NMMI and compiled a 12-6 record including nine wins over ranked opponents. The two will be paired together in doubles play at Henderson.

Miller prepped at Independence High School in McKinney, Texas last year where she earned First-team District 9-5A honors.

Tarleton State is 1-0 on the season and ranked No. 6 in the South Central Region and No. 44 nationally.

Southwest Baptist in ranked No. 2 in the Central Region and No. 11 nationally after finishing 2016 with a 25-4 record overall and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA National Championships.
