HSU Tennis Wins GAC Opener Over Southern Nazarene 5-4

The Henderson State women's tennis team began Great American Conference play with a 5-4 win over Southern Nazarene, Friday in Bethany, Okla.

The Reddies fell behind 2-1 after doubles play with the lone Henderson win coming at No. 3 doubles as Mariah Bartlett and Lauren Miller fought off Indit Mas and Trista LaGrande 8-4.

In singles play, Bartlett and Miller quickly beat their opponents to give HSU a 3-2 advantage. Bartlett beat Mas at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-2, while Miller cruised to victory at No. 6 singles over LaGrande 6-1, 6-1.

Henderson lost two tough matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, giving the Crimson Storm a 4-3 lead with two singles matches remaining.

Lorraine Banimataku tied the match at 4-4 with a highly contested 7-5, 7-5 win over Dragana Samardzic at No. 4 singles.

The decisive match came at No. 2 singles as Thea Minor Thea Minor held off Noelia Gomez  7-6 (7-4) , 7-5 to claim the victory for Henderson.

Henderson will next travel to Searcy on Tuesday to take on Harding with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
