Following a tough series last weekend against No.17 Harding, the Henderson State softball team looks to get back on track when Arkansas Tech comes to Arkadelphia for a four-game series at Dee White Field, with double-headers starting at 1 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Monday. The series was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but the threat of inclement weather prompted the switch to Sunday and Monday.
Series:
The Reddies are 36-25 all-time against ATU and went 1-4 against the Golden Suns last year. Henderson was swept in the four-game series in Russellville, Arkansas, but then defeated No.1 seed ATU 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the GAC Tournament behind a big performance in the circle from pitcher
Michelle Sorensen.
Henderson State Notes:
The Reddies are looking to right the ship after getting swept in their series last weekend against No.17 Harding in Searcy, Arkansas. Henderson had a tough time at the plate against a dominant Lady Bisons' pitching staff which allowed just five HSU runs in four games. The Reddies remain tied for seventh place in the Great American Conference standings with East Central at 3-5 in conference play and 9-11 overall.
Despite the tough weekend, several Reddies have shined early in the year. Junior catcher
Courtney Warren has been productive at the plate for the Reddies, batting .344 with a .578 slugging percentage, and has a GAC-leading nine doubles on the season. Senior infielder
Keirsten Seahorn has also played well for Henderson, with a team-leading .356 batting average and 16 RBIs, while junior infielder
Olivia Trapp has been able to consistently reach base for the Reddies, and is 10th in the GAC with an on base percentage of .447.
In the circle this season, so far for Henderson, it has been the
Michelle Sorensen show. Sorensen, a junior from Sherwood, Arkansas, has been a workhorse for the Reddies and leads the conference in appearances (17), games started (11), and innings pitched (73.0). Despite the heavy work load, Sorensen has remained effective for Henderson and is third in the GAC in opponents batting average (.195) and fourth in strikeouts (66).
Henderson is 5-4 at Dee White Field this year and took three games from Oklahoma Baptist in its last home series.
Arkansas Tech Notes:
The Golden Suns come to Arkadelphia this weekend tied for second place in the GAC standings at 7-1 and 13-7 overall in the 2017 season.Â
Tech is led by do-it-all star senior Jalissa Gum, who shines at the plate, where she bats .391 and has a team-leading 27 hits and 19 RBIs, and also in the circle, where she has tallied a league-best 109 strikeouts in 11 appearances and carries a 3.13 ERA. Just four weeks into the 2017 season, Gum has already received both GAC Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors.Â
Sophomore outfielder Sydnie Henson has also been a steady presence for Tech at the plate, batting .417 and only striking out twice in 60 at bats for far this year. In the circle junior Morgan Vaughn leads ATU with a 2.08 ERA and already has five wins and four saves to her credit. The Golden Suns have won seven of their last eight games and are 4-0 in true road games this season.
