RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. —
Annie Shannon and
Lorraine Banimataku won in straight sets in No.1 and No. 4 singles, but Arkansas Tech took the other four, as well as all three doubles matches, to defeat Henderson State 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Suns put the Reddies into a hole early by sweeping doubles play and then taking No. 5 doubles to seize a 4-0 advantage in the match. Shannon got Henderson on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Macarena Acosta, her fifth singles victory of the year.
Tech got the decisive win shortly after at No. 3 singles when Teresa Sanchez defeated
Alexandra Cuello 6-3, 6-3, but the Reddies had some fight left in them and picked up another singles victory when Banimataku prevailed over ATU's Annabel Rowlands at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-3.
Lauren Miller nearly picked up the win in No. 6 singles as well, but ultimately fell to Haleigh Long 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, in a tightly contested match. The loss drops HSU to 4-5 on the year and 1-1 in Great American Conference play.
The Reddies next game is March 28 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 2 p.m. in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Henderson returns to GAC action on March 31 against Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. in Arkadelphia.
