After taking three games from Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday and Monday, the Henderson State softball team will travel to Bethany, Oklahoma for its final regular season series of the year against Southern Nazarene, with doubleheaders set for Noon Friday and Noon Saturday.
Series:
The Reddies are 10-6 all-time against the Crimson Storm and took three games from them last year in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Henderson State Notes:
The Reddies are 23-29 overall and 17-23 in Great American Conference play in 2017. HSU is currently in sixth place in the GAC standings, one game ahead of both SNU and NWOSU, who are tied for seventh. The standings are complicated heading into the final weekend of the season, as there are four teams - Henderson, SNU, NWOSU and Ouachita Baptist - vying for the final three spots in the GAC Tournament in Bentonville, Arkansas. Of the four teams, the Reddies are in the best position and can clinch a berth in the field, regardless of what the other three teams do, by winning two games against the Crimson Storm. Should Henderson fail to take two from SNU, the tournament seeding will be determined by the outcomes of the series between OBU and Oklahoma Baptist and the series between NWOSU and Harding.Â
HSU had a strong showing in its final home series on Sunday and Monday against NWOSU, claiming wins in three of the four games, including a sweep in Monday's doubleheader.
Michelle Sorensen provided the highlight of the series in the first game on Sunday by throwing the fifth no-hitter of her career and her second no-hitter this season. Sorensen also won her second start in the late game Monday against the Lady Rangers and her efforts were enough to earn her GAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time in 2017. In two starts against NWOSU, she held the Lady Rangers to no runs on just four hits and piled up 13 strikeouts over 14.0 innings.
Offensively against NWOSU,
Bethany Allen and
Brooklynn Jimeson each had strong weekends, racking up four hits apiece, while
Olivia Trapp had four RBIs.Â
As a team, Henderson is batting .257 on the year and holding its opponents to a .230 batting average. The Reddies' team ERA for the year is 2.51 which is fourth-best in the GAC.
Southern Nazarene Notes:
The Crimson Storm enter the season's final weekend 20-32 overall and 16-24 in the GAC. SNU has lost five of its last six contests, including three of four last weekend to East Central in Ada, Oklahoma. Prior to this recent skid, the Crimson Storm had won 10 of their last 12 games.
SNU is led by freshman Mahina Sauer, who leads the team in hits (46) and RBIs (34) and carries a slugging percentage of .613. Sauer has the fifth-best batting average in the GAC (.387) and is third in the league in OBP (.510).
The Crimson Storm's go-to pitcher in the circle is junior Katelyn Brown, who has started 28 games this season, has a record of 16-15 and carries a 3.51 ERA. She has 164 strikeouts on the year and has held opponents to a .254 batting average.
