ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State looks to rebound from a hard-fought loss to SWOSU on Saturday when it faces Northwestern Oklahoma State in the Duke Wells Center at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
- Henderson State held one of the nation's top scoring offenses in check for most of the night and cut a once-10 point deficit down to just four with three minutes to play, but the Reddies went cold from the field late and fell to No. 9 Southwestern Oklahoma State 71-61 on Thursday evening in the Duke Wells Center.
- Over the final three minutes, the Reddies (12-6, 8-4) got the stops they needed on the Lady Bulldog's high-powered offense, but could not come up with a bucket on the other end, ultimately going 1-for-8 from the floor after trimming the deficit to four points. With Henderson unable to get anything to fall, SWOSU (17-1, 12-0) salted the game away at the line, going 8-for-8 from the stripe late to escape with the win and remain unbeaten in GAC action.
- The Reddies put four players in double figures and were led byÂ
Bree Bossier, who turned in a monster performance, finishing with 17 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks.
Brittany Branum scored a season-high 16 points and hit four 3-pointers, whileÂ
Pink Jones had 13 points and six assists.Â
Blu Jones, who chipped in 11, was the final double-digit scorer for Henderson.
Reddies Report
- Despite the loss on Thursday evening, the Reddies held SWOSU, who averages just over 86 points per game, to under 80 points for just the third time this season, as well as 39.7 percent shooting from the floor. HSU also out-rebounded the bigger Lady Bulldogs 41-38.
-
Pink Jones has moved up one spot to third overall in the GAC in scoring (16.4 points per game) despite scoring beneath her season average on Thursday. Jones has scored in double figures in every game this season outside of just one: Henderson's first matchup with NWOSU, where she scored just eight points.
-
Hailey Estes was overtaken as the GAC's rebounding leader by SWOSU's Bethany Franks and now ranks second in the conference in rebounds per game (9.1).
-
Blu Jones had one of the better scoring games of her career last night, finishing with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field. It was her third double-digit scoring effort this season and first in GAC play.
-
Bree Bossier played, arguably, the finest game of her career for the Reddies against SWOSU and notched a career-high in points (17), rebounds (16), and blocks (5) all in the same game, while also playing a season high 32 minutes. Bossier is now averaging 7.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
-
Brittany Branum scored a season-high 16 for Henderson on Thursday and was 4-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line — her first 3-pointers of the season and the most she has made in a single game in her career. Branum averaged 9.5 points and 4.9 rebounds a game for the Reddies last season.
- The Reddies' defense continues to pester opponents in 2017-18. Henderson is first in scoring defense (64.5 points per game) and in 3-point field goal percentage defense (26.6 percent). HSU is currently third in field goal percentage defense (37.9 percent) but less than one percentage point behind GAC-leader Southern Nazarene, who holds opponents to 37 percent shooting from the floor.
- Henderson has performed well as a team at the free throw line this season and is shooting 73.3 percent from the stripe in conference play (fifth in the GAC).
Scouting NWOSU
- The Lady Rangers are 9-9 on the year and 5-7 in GAC action this season. They are led by head coach Tasha Diesselhorst, who has led them to an 18-28 record in two season in Alva, Oklahoma.
- Junior guard Jade Jones leads NWOSU in scoring (13.9 points per game) and assists (5.7 per game) but shoots just 28.9 percent from the field and 28.8 percent from beyond the 3-point line this season. She averages 33.8 minutes per game. Freshman Kinsey Neiderer is the only other double digit scorer for the Lady Rangers and averages right at 10 points per game.
- NWOSU struggles defensively and at the free throw line. In GAC action, the Lady Rangers rank 11th in the league in scoring defense, allowing 76.5 points per game, and 10th in free throw shooting percentage (64.5 percent). NWOSU, however, excels on the offensive glass, where they rank first in the GAC in offensive rebounds per game (15.4).
First Matchup vs. NWOSU
- In the earlier meeting this season with NWOSU, which was the first GAC contest of the year for both teams, Henderson had the ball with 11 seconds remaining in a 71-71 game and a chance to take the final shot. However, a miss and a foul in the backcourt after a NWOSU rebound led to the Lady Rangers' Jade Jones hitting one free throw with four seconds remaining to win it 72-71 in dramatic fashion for NWOSU.
-
Haleigh Henson led HSU with a team-high 17 points and five 3-pointers, while Bossier added 13 and nine rebounds for the near double-double. Estes also nearly had a double-double with 11 boards and nine points andÂ
Pink Jones scored eight in just 23 minutes of action for Henderson after being saddled with three early fouls.
- Since the loss to NWOSU, the Reddies have lost just three GAC contests — two of which came to unbeaten and No. 9 SWOSU.
