ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After sweeping through the Southwest Baptist Classic, the Reddies head back to the Show-Me State for a Friday afternoon matchup with the Missouri Southern State Lions at 12 p.m. in Joplin, Missouri.
Henderson State (2-0) faced Southwest Baptist and the University of Sioux Falls in Bolivar, Missouri, last weekend and won both games by double digits. While Henderson got contributions up and down its roster, the weekend's standouts were
Hailey Estes and
Pink Jones, who each topped the 20-point mark in both contests. Estes poured in 25 points against Southwest Baptist before leading the Reddies with 21 in the win over USF. Estes made five 3-pointers in both games. Jones, a First Team All-GAC honoree last season and an early season candidate for GAC Player of the Year, got off to a scorching start and averaged 21.5 points during the two games on 58.6 percent shooting from the field. For her efforts, she earned the first GAC Player of the Week award of the 2018-19 season.
Blu Jones scored in double-figures in both games as well and was 8-for-12 from beyond the arc during the weekend's action.
Scouting Missouri Southern
The Lions picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday evening against Oklahoma Panhandle State after dropping both games in the GAC / MIAA Challenge to begin the season. The Lions' losses were against familiar foes for Henderson, as Missouri Southern fell to Oklahoma Baptist 73-63 and No. 20 Southwestern Oklahoma State 82-50. One of the toughest tasks for the Lions will be replacing its Second Team All-MIAA post player Desirea Burge, who averaged 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last season. The Reddies will be matched up with another familiar face on Friday, as former Ouachita Baptist standout Chasidee Owens takes the floor for the Lions. Owens was the only All-GAC honoree for the Tigers last season and averaged 10.5 points per game on 45.2 percent shooting. She is currently the only Lions player averaging double-figures with 12.3 points per game in three contests. The Reddies guard-heavy line up could have an advantage against a Missouri Southern squad that has struggled to get consistent play from that position group this season. The Lions are shooting just 28.6 percent from 3-point range and have turned the ball over 75 times in three contests for an average of 25 turnovers per game.
