ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Riding high after securing a huge comeback win over East Central on Saturday afternoon, the Henderson State women's basketball team seeks its program record 14th Great American Conference win on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Arkansas-Monticello in the Duke Wells Center.
Last Time Out
- Behind 23 points from
Haleigh Henson and a hot-shooting second half, Henderson State erased an 18-point halftime deficit and rallied to defeat East Central 79-71 on Saturday afternoon in the Duke Wells Center.
- The Reddies (17-6, 13-4) trailed by as many as 21 points in the second quarter and found themselves down 43-25 at the break to the Tigers, who held Henderson to just 30 percent shooting in the first half. However, the third quarter was a different story, as the Reddies came out firing and opened the second half on a 25-5 run to double their point total from the first half in just seven minutes and tie the game up at 50-50.
- In the fourth, Henderson wasted no time gaining control of the game. With ECU up 58-56, Henson got open and drilled a deep 3-pointer to give the Reddies their first lead 59-58. After two free throws from
Blu Jones and a Tiger bucket made it 61-60, HSU made its move, and used five-straight points from
Lani Snowden and 3-pointers from both
Blu Jones and Henson to take the next 11 points and quickly grab its biggest lead of the game, 72-60, with 2:12 to go. ECU tried to rally, and trimmed the lead down to just six points in the final seconds, but it was too little, too late, as the Reddies ran out the clock to seal their biggest comeback win of the year.
- Henson was tremendous for Henderson, finishing with 23 points and five assists.
Bree Bossier had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Snowden notched a career-high with 16 points. Estes did a little bit of everything for the Reddies and wound up with 16 rebounds, nine points and six assists on the afternoon.
Reddies Report
- The win for Henderson on Saturday was its fifth in a row and improved the Reddies to 17-6 overall and 13-4 in the GAC this season. Their 13 conference wins ties the program-record for GAC wins in a season, which came in 2015-16 when Henderson finished 13-9 in league play. 17 overall wins is the most for the Reddies in one season since 2007-08 when they won 19 games.
- The Reddies are currently alone in third place in the GAC standings with five games remaining in the regular season. HSU is one game behind Arkansas Tech for second place and is five full games ahead of Ouachita Baptist, who is in fourth place. With a win on Thursday, Henderson will lock up no worse than the No. 3 seed at the GAC Tournament in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on March 1-4. Statistically, the Reddies are one of three teams in the league still alive in the hunt for the regular season conference title, although they would need some help in order to claim the title.
- Henderson needs three wins in its final five games to reach the 20-win mark this season, which would mark just the sixth time in program history for the Reddies to eclipse 20 wins. As it stands, 2017-18 is currently the ninth-best season in program history with 17 wins already claimed. With a victory against UAM, the 2017-18 team can move up into seventh-place all-time in Henderson history for wins in a season.
- In the most recent D2SIDA Central Region Poll, the Reddies are No. 10, according to the sports information directors in the region. The final eight teams in the WBCA Central Region rankings will play in the NCAA Central Region Tournament.
-
Pink Jones averages 16.6 points per game and is shooting 48.9 percent from the field this season. Jones had her highest scoring output of the year (37 points) and her lowest scoring output of the year in back-to-back games this weekend.
-
Haleigh Henson is now the GAC all-time leader in 3-point field goals with 271 after hitting seven last week. Henson is shooting just under 37 percent from beyond the arc this year and is averaging 13.4 points on 39 percent shooting from the field — career-bests in both categories.
-
Hailey Estes continues to nearly average a double-double and is putting up 11.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this year. Estes finished with a season-high 16 rebounds in the comeback win over ECU on Saturday — her 10th game this season with double figure rebounds. She has played all 40 minutes in four of the Reddies' last six games.
-
Bree Bossier notched her fifth double-double of the season on Saturday with 16 points and 13 rebounds against ECU. Bossier has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games for Henderson and has also grabbed double figure rebounds in five of those contests. She averages 8.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and is shooting just under 53 percent from the field this season.
-
Lani Snowden had arguably her best game of the season on Saturday and put up a career-high 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting and hit a career-best four 3-pointers, including a huge one late in the fourth quarter. Snowden has put together a solid freshman campaign and has averaged 22 minutes per game and shot 88.5 percent from the free throw line this year.
Scouting Arkansas-Monticello
- The Blossoms enter Thursday night's contest 7-15 overall and 3-14 in GAC play this season. UAM has lost 11 of its last 13 games and has won just two GAC road contests this year. They are led by head coach Tanya Ray, who has led UAM to a record of 59-113 in seven seasons at the school.
- UAM is led by senior guard Brittnee Broadway who averages 12.6 points per game and shoots 74.4 percent at the line, where she has made 117 trips this season. The Blossoms also lean on junior guard Charlene Perry, who averages 10.2 points per game and has hit 41 3-pointers this season — the most on the team.
- Offensively, the Blossoms struggle to score the ball and average just 61.9 points per game. They are strong defensively, however, and allow their opponents just 68 points per contest.
First Matchup with Arkansas-Monticello
- Henderson had four players in double-figures and shot 50 percent from the field back on Jan.13 , as the Reddies ran away from Arkansas-Monticello 69-47 to stretch their then-GAC winning streak to a program-record six games.
- The Reddies led by 17 points at halftime and after maintaining that advantage throughout the third quarter, opened the final period with a 10-1 run to put the game out of reach for the Blossoms.
Torrie Thompson was the catalyst for HSU on the offensive end, finishing with 17 points after scoring 11 in the first half. Jones, Henson and Snowden each added 11 points, with both Henson and Snowden hitting three 3-pointers, while Jones chipped in seven assists. Estes finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and five assists in the win.
