ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After seeing its six-game win streak snapped in the final seconds against Arkansas Tech, the Henderson State women's basketball team looks to regroup in the final home game of the season at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in the Duke Wells Center against rival Ouachita Baptist.
Last Time Out
- Henderson State went toe-to-toe with Arkansas Tech for 36 minutes on Saturday afternoon and had the lead late, but the Reddies went scoreless in the last four minutes and
Pink Jones' potential game-tying shot rolled off the front of the rim in the final seconds, as the Golden Suns defeated Henderson 68-65 to snap the Reddies' six-game win streak.
- The Reddies had the ball with less than 20 seconds left and a chance to take the lead, but a turnover forced Henderson to foul three times in the last 10 seconds in order to put ATU on the free throw line. The Golden Suns' Cheyenne North hit 1-of-2 at the stripe with 6.3 seconds to go to give them a 67-65 advantage, but after a timeout to advance the ball, the Reddies had one last chance.
Needing two to tie or three to win,
Pink Jones attacked the basket and got a good look on a fading 10-foot jumper with seconds left, but it rolled off the front of the rim into ATU's hands. The Golden Suns tacked on a free throw with less than a second left and Henderson did not have enough time to get a shot off, as the Reddies fell 68-65.
- Henson led HSU with 24 points and hit six 3-pointers, while
Blu Jones added 12 points and six rebounds. Bossier notched her sixth double-double in eight games by finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds and
Pink Jones chipped in 10 points of her own. The Reddies hit 11 3-pointers, which marks the first time this season HSU has lost when hitting 10 3-pointers or more, but they were out-rebounded 45-39 and ATU won the second chance points-battle 18-4.
Reddies Report
- With three games remaining in the regular season, Henderson is two games behind Arkansas Tech for the No. 2 seed in the GAC Tournament, but can finish no worse than third in the standings. One more GAC win will set a new program record for conference wins in a single season. Two more victories would result in just the sixth 20-win season in HSU history and the first since 2005-06.
-
Pink Jones continues her campaign for First Team All-GAC and is averaging 16.3 points per game (4th in the GAC), 3.7 assists per game (7th in the GAC) and is shooting 48.8 percent from the floor, the highest shooting percentage of any guard in the conference. Jones is also shooting over 75 percent at the free throw line this season. She has scored in double figures 22 times this year.
-
Haleigh Henson, who was named GAC Player of the Week for her efforts two weeks ago, had another strong showing on Saturday and poured in 24 points with six 3-pointers. She has now moved into fifth all-time at Henderson in scoring and has 1230 points in her career. Her 13.5 points per game ranks 12th in the GAC.
-
Hailey Estes ranks third in the GAC in rebounding (8.6 per game) and has scored in double figures in five of the Reddies' last seven games. She averages 11.3 points per game and is shooting 83.6 percent at the free throw line this season.
-
Bree Bossier added yet another double-double to her collection on Saturday and finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds, which marks her sixth double-double in the last eight games for Henderson. Bossier has pulled down double figure rebounds and played 30 or more minutes in seven of her last eight contests.
- The Reddies' defense, which has been one of the biggest stories of the season, continues to be the standard in the GAC. Henderson leads the conference in scoring defense (64.8 points per game) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (27.3 percent). Offensively, HSU ranks fifth in the league in in scoring offense and averages 71.7 points per game, but leads the conference in field goal percentage (43 percent).
- Henderson is 6-2 since its last matchup with OBU, which included a six-game win streak. The Reddies have won six of the last seven matchups with the Lady Tigers dating back to 2014.
Scouting Ouachita Baptist
- OBU enters Tuesday night's game 13-12 overall and 9-10 in GAC action. They are led by Henderson graduate Garry Crowder, who is in his 23rd season as head coach at the school. The Lady Tigers are 4-4 since the last matchup with the Reddies.
- The Lady Tigers are led by Chasidee Owens, who averages a team-high 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Guard Morgan Miller, who averages nine points per game, is a deadly 3-point shooter and has hit 75 shots from beyond the arc this season (75-for-153).
- Ouachita Baptist shoots well from the field offensively (41.8 percent) but struggles with turnovers. The Lady Tigers have a turnover margin of -3.63 (11th in the GAC) and are last in the league in assists to turnover ratio (0.8). OBU has 350 turnovers in GAC play this season — the most in the conference.
First Matchup with Ouachita Baptist
- Defense was the story for Henderson in the first game with OBU, as the Reddies held Ouachita Baptist to just 22 points and 27.3 percent shooting from the field in the second half to pull away from their rival 67-56 at Bill Vining Arena.
- Leading 59-52 with 7:44 to play after a Lady Tiger 3-pointer from guard Morgan Miller, Henderson went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes, led by back-to-back buckets from
Pink Jones, to seize a 67-52 advantage with just over two minutes left. OBU (9-8, 5-6) had no answer, as the 3-pointer from Miller proved to be Ouachita's second-to-last basket from the field in the game. With victory in hand after holding the Lady Tigers to just nine points in the final period, the Reddies were able to dribble out the clock and pick up their eighth Great American Conference win of the season.
- Jones was terrific for Henderson, finishing with 25 points, six rebounds and five steals on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and perfect 7-for-7 shooting at the free throw line. Bossier, who played the majority of the fourth quarter with four fouls, chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. Estes, who also played smart down the stretch with four personals against her, added eight points and seven rebounds, while
Blu Jones had seven points and Henson six.
