ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — With a new program-record of 15 conference wins secured, the Henderson State women's basketball team will look to eclipse the 20-win mark this season when it takes on Southern Arkansas at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Magnolia, Arkansas.
Last Time Out
- After falling behind to rival Ouachita Baptist with four minutes left on Tuesday night, Henderson State finished the game on an 11-4 run to rally past the Tigers 71-64 and notch a program-record 15th conference win.
- The Reddies (19-7, 15-5) had led for most of the night, but with 3:56 to go in the game, OBU got a layup from Morgan Miller, which capped a 7-0 run, to take a 60-59 lead — its first lead since it was 35-34 at the halftime break. At that moment, seniorÂ
Bree Bossier took over for Henderson and scored back-to-back layups on nifty post moves to push the Reddies back in front 63-60 with 2:36 to go. After a Lady Tiger bucket made it a one-point game, HSU answered with a back-breaking 7-0 spurt. Bossier again got a contested layup to go in the post to push the lead back out to three, thenÂ
Hailey Estes — who had struggled from the field for most of the night — buried a 3-pointer from the corner off of aÂ
Haleigh Henson assist to stretch it to 68-62 with 1:04 to play.
- In desperation mode, OBU missed on a 3-pointer, and instead of pulling it out to run the clock on the ensuing fast break, Bossier cashed in on her fourth layup of the final three minutes to make it an eight-point game with 37 seconds left. The three-straight buckets proved to be too much for OBU to overcome, as Bossier hit one final free throw to ice the game and send the Duke Wells Center into the off-season in style.
- Bossier finished with a flourish for Henderson and got her seventh double-double in nine games with a 13-point, 13-rebound effort.Â
Blu Jones chipped in a career-high 17 — 15 of which came in the first half — and Henson wrapped up her time at the Duke Wells Center with 15 big points and three assists.
Reddies Report
- Henderson is locked into the No. 3 seed at the GAC Tournament in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on March 1-4 and will play on Friday, March 2 in the late game at 8 p.m. The opponent is to be determined by the outcome of the remaining games this weekend.
-
Bree Bossier's string of impressive outings rolls on after she produced another double-double for Henderson against OBU with 13 points and 13 rebounds. She now has seven double-doubles in the last nine games for the Reddies and is averaging 13.1 points and 12.2 rebounds per game over HSU's last 10 contests. Bossier is seventh in the GAC in rebounding (8 rebounds per game) and third in field goal percentage (50.3 percent). She has scored in double figures in nine of the last ten games.
-
Blu Jones finished with a career-high 17 points on Tuesday night and scored 15 of those points in the first 13 minutes of the game. Jones was 7 of 9 from the field and 5 for 5 inside the 3-point line. She has scored in double figures in six of the last nine games for Henderson and is averaging 7.4 points.
-
Karrington Whaley played just nine minutes in Tuesday's win over OBU, but those nine minutes were incredibly productive. Whaley scored eight points on 4 of 5 shooting, grabbed four rebounds and had a career-high four blocked shots.
-
Haleigh Henson had another big night for the Reddies against OBU and finished with 15 points and three 3-pointers. Henson now has 1245 points in her career and needs just three points to surpass Angela Brown for fourth all-time in scoring at Henderson. With 73 3-pointers this year, Henson also needs just 10 more to set the program record for 3-point field goals in a single season. The win over OBU marked the 100th game of Henson's career in which she hit a 3-pointer. She's scored in double figures in 10 of the last 13 games.
- As a team, Henderson has hit 209 3-pointers this year and needs 21 more to set the single season record for 3-point field goals in one campaign. The Reddies continue to lead the GAC in scoring defense (65.1 points per game) and field goal percentage (43.1 percent), which has been a recipe for success all season long.
- A 20th win this year would make 2017-18 just the sixth time in the history of the program that the Reddies have eclipsed 20 wins in a single season.
Scouting Southern Arkansas
- The Lady Muleriders enter Thursday's contest 9-17 overall and 8-12 in GAC play this season. They are led by head coach Julio Pacheco, who is in his third season at the helm of the program.
- SAU is led by senior guard Sue Key, a DI transfer from Minnesota, who averages 17.4 points per game, as well as sophomore forward Kimberley Crown, who averages 13.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor.
- As a team, SAU is a great shot blocking team and ranks third in the GAC in blocked shots per game (4.5). The Lady Muleriders struggle to rebound however and rank last in the league in rebounding defense, allowing 43 boards per game to their conference opponents this season.
First Matchup with Southern Arkansas
- Southern Arkansas jumped on Henderson State from the opening tip in the first matchup and never looked back, as the Lady Muleriders defeated the Reddies 78-63 at the Duke Wells Center to snap Henderson's then seven-game Great American Conference winning streak.
- The Lady Muleriders were white-hot to start the game, thanks in large part to Sue Key, who was unconscious from the get-go, and poured in 24 first quarter points to pace SAU to a 32-12 advantage after one period. The Reddies narrowed the gap to 35-21 with 6:37 remaining in the half after a 9-3 run to begin the second quarter, but SAU responded with a quick 11-0 spurt of its own to push its lead back up to 46-21 before ultimately leading at the break by 23 points.
- Henderson did all it could to claw back into the game in the second half and out-scored the Lady Muleriders by eight points over the last 20 minutes of action, but it was not enough to dig out of the first quarter hole, as SAU cruised to the win to end the Reddies' program-record conference winning streak which began back in November.
-
Haleigh Henson led Henderson with 19 points and hit three 3-pointers, whileÂ
Pink Jones added 11 despite playing just 16 minutes after being saddled with first half foul trouble.Â
Hailey Estes came up one point short of her fifth double-double in six games, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. Key finished with a game-high 40 points for SAU.
- The Reddies shot just 34.5 percent for the game while the Lady Muleriders connected on 47.6 percent of their attempts, including just under 60 percent in the first half.
