SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
- Northwestern Oklahoma State (NWOSU) comes into Saturday's contest 0-2 on the year with two close losses to Ouachita Baptist (29-21) and UAM (44-36). The Rangers were 5-6 last year and have improved by one win in each of head coach Matt Walter's first three years in Alva, Oklahoma.
- The Rangers are led by junior running back Jacob Peyton, who leads the GAC in rushing yards (237) and rushing yards per game (118.5). Senior quarterback Isaiah Weed will start under center and is sixth in the conference in passing yards (409). Defensively, NWOSU leans on junior linebackers Dakota Driskill, who is the league-leader in tackles through two weeks with 28 stops, and 2017 First Team All-GAC honoree Maurice Wright Jr., who is second behind Driskill with 26 tackles this season. Senior receiver Horatio Smith was Second Team All-GAC in 2017.
- NWOSU is a powerful offensive team despite its 0-2 record. The Rangers are second in the GAC in total offense with an average of 448.5 yards per game, and are the No. 3 rushing offense in the league (244 yards per game). Penalties and turnovers have plagued the Ranger offense thus far. NWOSU has committed 18 penalties for 184 yards and carries a turnover margin of -3 through two contests, both of which are second-to-worst in the conference. Defensively, the Rangers have been inconsistent. They rank 10th in the GAC in total defense and allow 452.5 yards per game to their opponents.
- Historically, the Rangers have struggled in GAC action. NWOSU has never had a winning record since it joined the league and has not finished above .500 overall since 2010, when they went 8-3.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING
- NWOSU picked up its first win over Henderson State in 15 years last season when they defeated the Reddies 36-30 at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field.

NWOSU converted three 4th-down conversions in the final quarter, the biggest of which was a 35-yard rush on 4th-and-2 from Isaiah Weed, which set up the Rangers' game-winning score with just 1:32 to play. Needing six points, the Reddies threw an interception on their first play of the ensuing drive which ended it for NWOSU.
- The Rangers out-scored Henderson 29-17 in the second half and out-gained the Reddies 431-413. Both teams rushed for 270 yards in the game. Reddie quarterback
