ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — No. 22 Henderson State (8-1) looks to clinch an unbeaten regular season at home for the first time since 2013 on Saturday when the Reddies welcome Southern Arkansas (7-2) to Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field for Senior Day.
TOP STORYLINES: SETTING THE SCENE
- With two contests remaining in the regular season, the Reddies control their own destiny from a conference and national perspective. Wins over Southern Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist to end the year would secure HSU at least a share of its first fourth Great American Conference title and would likely clinch the program's first berth in the NCAA DII Playoffs since 2015.
- Saturday's matchup is the 83rd meeting all-time between the two south Arkansas rivals. HSU leads the series 45-35-2 and is 10-3 against the Muleriders under head coach Scott Maxfield. SAU has won two of the past three games against Henderson, but lost in its last trip to Arkadelphia in 2017.
REDDIES REPORT
- The Reddies got all they could handle last weekend from UAM and survived 27-20 thanks in large part to the efforts of its defense. Henderson was on the field for 77 plays and 37 minutes defensively but held the Weevils to just 20 points. UAM, who came in as one of the dominant rushing teams in the GAC, ran the ball 61 times for just 222 yards; an average of 3.6 yards per carry.
- Receiver L'liott Curry made his case for All-American honors against UAM and carried the Henderson offense with 10 receptions for a career-high 184 yards and two touchdowns. Curry is one of just three players in the country with 65-plus catches, 890-plus yards and 12 or more touchdown receptions. He is 107 yards away from becoming just the fouth player ever at HSU to record 1,000 yards receiving in a season. Curry is 10th nationally in receiving yards (893) and tied for fourth with 12 touchdowns.
- Quarterback Richard Stammetti reached a milestone on Saturday against UAM when he threw three touchdown passes to hit 40 total for his career at Henderson State. Stammetti is just the fourth player in program history to throw for 40 scores, joining Kevin Rodgers, Nick Hardesty and Roch Charpentier. He is now third all-time at HSU with 4,723 passing yards.Â
- As a team, Henderson is second in the GAC in scoring offense (34.1 points per game) and third in scoring defense (16.3 points per game allowed). The Reddies are one of two teams in the league that have scored 40 or more touchdowns this season and allowed less than 20. HSU has held seven of its nine opponents to 21 points or fewer in 2019.Â
- Henderson is second in the GAC in turnover margin (+5) and is tied for second in the conference with 11 interceptions this year. The Reddies have lost just one fumble all season which leads the league. HSU has also been stout defensively in the red zone and leads the GAC in red zone defense. Opponents have scored on just 17 of 27 red zone possessions (63%) against Henderson in 2019, good for 11th in the nation.
- Cornerback CJ Jones was named GAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after recording eight tackles, a tackle for loss and his first career interception against UAM. Jones' honor gives the Reddies' defense three of the last four GAC Defensive Players of the Week. As a team, Henderson State has registered 57 tackles for loss and been stopped for lost yardage just 27 times on offense. 19 different players have registered a tackle for loss this year for HSU.
- During their five-game win streak, the Reddies have been exceptional on third down both offensively and defensively. HSU's offense is 40-for-72 on third down conversions in the last five games (56%) which would be the second-best percentage in the nation if extended for a full season. On the defensive side, Henderson is second in the GAC and 28th in the country in third down defense, allowing opponents to convert on just 37 of 119 third down chances (31.1%).
- The Reddies have had a great deal of success against Southern Arkansas at home in recent times. HSU has won five-straight games over SAU at home and has not lost to the Muleriders at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field since 2004. The last two meetings in Arkadelphia were particularly memorable for Henderson. In 2015, Reddies' quarterback Dallas Hardison scored the game-winning touchdown as time expired for a 29-28 victory and in 2017 HSU upset the GAC-leading Muleriders 36-30 with a late Ben Johnson touchdown in a game that was broadcast on ESPN3.Â
- A win on Saturday would give the Reddies their fifth season with nine or more wins since Scott Maxfield's arrival in 2005. Prior to the Maxfield era, Henderson State had just five total seasons with nine or more wins in 96 years of playing football at the school. Maxfield's 107 victories is second all-time at HSU and he is 13 wins away from surpassing Sporty Carpenter as the winningest coach in program history.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
- Southern Arkansas enters Saturday's showdown 7-2 on the year and in conference play. The Muleriders dropped just their second game of the season last week in a 38-21 loss to Ouachita Baptist at the Murphy USA Classic in El Dorado, Arkansas. SAU is led by Bill Keopple who is in his 11th year at the school and recently became the program's all-time wins leader (64). Under Keopple, SAU has won seven or more games in each of the last five seasons dating back to 2015.
- The Muleriders are led offensively by running back Kor'Davion Washington, who has carried the ball 133 times for 825 yards and eight touchdowns this year. SAU quarterback Hayden Mallory has thrown for 1693 yards and 14 touchdowns this year while also protecting the ball and throwing just five interceptions. Mallory's favorite target has been Jared Lancaster, who leads the team with 28 receptions for 478 yards. SAU is fifth in the GAC in both scoring offense (30.6 points per game) and total offense (397.7 yards per game).
- Defensively, SAU is led by defensive lineman Antonio Washington, who was a First Team All-GAC and All-Region selection in 2018. Washington is second in the league with 10 tackles for loss and also has three sacks this season. Linebacker Malik Preston leads the team with 51 tackles on the year and has 3.5 tackles for loss to his credit. As a team, Southern Arkansas is third in total defense (310.8 yards per game to opponents) and fourth in scoring defense (20.2 points allowed per game).
- SAU has experience in tight contests and has prevailed in several close games this season. The Muleriders defeated Oklahoma Baptist 30-28 back in September behind a game-winning 48-yard field goal as time expired, then rallied to defeat East Central 24-23 two weeks ago after trailing by two scores early in the fourth quarter.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING
- Henderson State's offense ran into a wall in last year's contest, as No. 21 Southern Arkansas held the Reddies to just 155 total yards and captured the 2018 Murphy USA Classic crown 34-14. The loss snapped Henderson's four-game winning streak.
- The Mulerider defense stifled the Reddies in the opening half, as two HSU turnovers and two quick touchdowns just before the horn from SAU helped the Riders build a daunting 34-0 advantage at the halftime break. Henderson won the second half 14-0, but the comeback attempt fell short.
- One of the lone positives for HSU came in the third quarter courtesy of the defense, when Malik Brown picked off his second pass of the game three yards deep in the Southern Arkansas end zone and returned it for the Reddies' first score. The 103-yard pick-six was the longest interception return for a touchdown in school history.
