Softball Travels to Huntsville for UAH Charger Chillout on Friday

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After winning two games last weekend at the Ronnie Hawkins Invitational, Henderson State will play in the second of three non-conference invitational tournaments before conference play on Friday and Saturday, when the Reddies hit the road to Huntsville, Alabama, for the UAH Charger Chillout.

Henderson (2-1) dropped the season opener to Northeastern State but rebounded with two decisive victories over Missouri S&T and Southwest Baptist. As a team, the Reddies batted .410 over the weekend, including a combined 12-for-19 line from Lindsey Williams and Abbie Moore. Sophomore standout Madie Green reached base safely in 10 of her 11 plate appearances and was awarded GAC Player of the Week honors for the season's first week.

Game 1: Trevecca Nazarene (Preseason No. 5 in GMAC) | February 8 | 4:00 P.M.
Friday night's first contest will serve as the season opener for Trevecca Nazarene. Last year, the Trojans finished 30-17 and 15-9 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Trevecca returns an impressive group of core players, including 2018 GMAC Player of the Year MaKray Odom. Odom, a shortstop, led the GMAC with a .493 batting average and ranked top five in the conference in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, and hits. Joining Odom is Megan Groves, Caitlyn Hudgins, Savannah Carr, and Tana Whited, all of whom were All-GMAC selections in 2018. The Trojans are looking to get back on top of the GMAC, which they won for four-straight seasons from 2013 to 2016. Trevecca is led by Ben Tyree, who has won Coach of the Year six times in his 10 years in Nashville.

Game 2: Christian Brothers University (Preseason No. 13 in GSC) | February 8 | 6:00 P.M.
Christian Brothers heads into Huntsville searching for the season's first win, having dropped all four games as a participant in the Ronnie Hawkins Invitational. The Lady Bucs' are hoping to turn around a program that has won just 10 conference games since 2014. This will be the second-straight season the Reddies will face CBU at this event. Henderson defeated the Lady Bucs 10-0 last season behind a combined five hits and seven RBIs from Green and Kaitlyn Felder. The Lady Bucs are coached by Jessie Homesley, who enters her second season in charge of CBU softball.

Game 3: Mississippi College (Preseason No. 3 in GSC) | February 9 | 11:00 A.M.
The Lady Choctaws enter the weekend 2-2 after splitting four games at the Division II Gulf Coast Invitational. MC lost 4-1 to Saint Leo and 3-1 to North Georgia, who were ranked No. 5 and No. 3 in the nation, respectively. The Lady Choctaws finished 29-16 last season and 19-12 in conference play, winning less than 30 games for the first time since 2014. MC returns Carly Crawford, a two-time First Team All-GSC selection, as well as Cori Cooper, who earned Second Team All-GSC honors after leading the Lady Choctaws in wins, innings pitched, ERA, and strikeouts. Crawford has picked up where she left off in 2018, hitting .364 in the first four games of the 2019 season. She has gotten help from Shayla McKissock and Morgan Bradford, who are a combined 9-for-17 through four outings. MC is led by Brooke O'Hair, who is in her 13th season in Clinton, Mississippi, and has won 344 games during her tenure.

Game 4: McKendree University (Preseason No. 3 in GLVC) | February 9 | 1:00 P.M.
Like Trevecca, McKendree will open its 2019 season against Henderson on Saturday. McKendree went 38-18 last season, including an impressive 20-8 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bearcats were bounced in the NCAA Midwest Regional, falling to Saginaw Valley State 13-11. MU will be looking to replace star player Brooke Gajewski, who was a two-time First Team All-GLVC honoree, a First Team D2CCA All-Midwest Region selection, and a Third Team All-American. Her younger sister, Miranda, will look to continue the family legacy at McKendree after earning GLVC Freshman of the Year recognition in 2018. Gajewski finished last season with a 1.98 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 176.1 innings, while hitting .348. The Bearcats are led by head coach Ashley Fleming, who enters her fourth season at the helm of the program.
