ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State took the doubles point from Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday at home, but the Lions won four of the six singles contests in straight-sets to defeat the Reddies 4-3 at the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center.
The Reddies got off to a great start to the match and claimed the doubles point from UAFS in dramatic fashion. With its No. 1 team of
Mulan Kamoe and
Franny Nyarko already in the win column with a 6-3 victory and its No. 3 team of
Erica Jaggernauth and
Tirzah Bailey having fallen 6-3, HSU turned to its No. 2 team of
Georjemah Row and
Vinda Teally with the point on the line.
Needing a win, Row and Teally got one, as the pair captured five-straight games after falling behind 5-2 to rally and win the set 7-5 to give Henderson a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for HSU, the momentum quickly shifted to UAFS in singles play. Kamoe and Nyarko both captured wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but the Lions won the other four individual contests in straight sets to overcome the early deficit and win the match 4-3.
Henderson returns to the court on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. when it faces Texas A&M-Texarkana in Arkadelphia.
