ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State administered some tough play Friday evening against the Great American Conference's third-place Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm, but came up just short as HSU fell to hard-hitting SOSU, 5-2. Â
Â
Doubles play saw a pair of great competition at Nos. 1 & 2, with 2s
Georjemah Row and
Katie Watts holding a 3-2 lead before eventually falling, 6-3.
Mulan Kamoe and
Franny Nyarko at No. 1 held a 4-3 lead in what had been a back-and-forth match up to then before play was suspended due to the doubles point having already been clinched by the Savage Storm.
Â
After Southwestern got out to a 3-0 lead after taking the first two singles finishes, Kamoe got the Reddies going first, storming back from a 6-1 first-set loss to defeat Southwestern's Zulay Castaneda, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, bringing her singles record to 5-6.
Â
Nyarko backed that up with her third victory at the No. 3 line after claiming a massive straight-set win over SOSU's Georgia Hosking, finding victory in a second-set tiebreaker where she rattled off six straight points, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Â
With HSU having closed the gap to 3-2, the Savage Storm took the final two matches, moving the overall match score to 5-2. Henderson State (4-7, 2-4) will close out its season tomorrow against Oklahoma Baptist for senior day at the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center at 3 p.m. where it will look to lock up the No. 5 seed in next week's GAC Championships.
