RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Henderson State opened the 2021-22 season today in Russellville, Arkansas, with the Great American Conference Individual Championships.
The Reddies, coming off their first GAC Tournament win since 2017, welcomed the season with semifinal bids from
Mulan Kamoe and
Erica Jaggernauth in singles, while Kamoe and
Georjemah Row earned a spot in the Flight 1 doubles semifinals..
Kamoe saw a first-round bye in Flight 1, but dropped her first round match against Harding's Grace Dodd. The junior from Nasoso Nadi, Fiji, responded with a Flight 2 victory over reigning GAC Freshman of the Year Aastha Dargude from Arkansas Tech, 8-5.
Kamoe will face Ouachita Baptist's Austynn Crocker at 9:15 a.m. Saturday morning in the Flight 2 semifinals with a berth to the finals in the balance.
In Flight 3, after Jaggernauth came up short in her marathon match in round one (5-7, 6-4, 12-14), the Rogers, Arkansas, native fought back in her Flight 4 draw, defeating Clarisa Valenzuela of OBU, 8-1.
Jaggernauth will be competing in the Flight 4 semifinals against Stephi McDonald of Southeastern at 9:15 a.m. Saturday morning. A win there would advance her to the Flight 4 finals at 11:45 a.m.
With play moving towards doubles action later in the afternoon,
Mulan Kamoe and
Georjemah Row found victory in their first match ever playing together as partners, defeating Arkansas Tech's Daniela Baez and Lea Grinberg, 6-3.
The Flight 1 semifinals match awaits the newly formed Reddie duo as they will take on Grace Dodd and Romane Britt of Harding at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Earlier on the day, Row defeated Britt in round one of the Flight 1 draw, 6-3, 6-2, while Kamoe fell to Dodd in her first round match.
Action for day two at the GAC Individual Championships begins at 9:15 with Kamoe and Jaggernauth's respective semifinal matches before Kamoe and Row see their semifinal contest at 1 p.m.
