HSU Meets Blossoms For Second Time This Season

GAME COVERAGE LINKS

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After its four-game winning streak was interrupted on its last road trip, Henderson State will look to rattle off another slew of wins when it heads to Monticello to take on Arkansas-Monticello for the second time this season Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. The first time around, HSU beat UAM in Arkadelphia, 75-39, in what was the fewest points allowed in the Jill Thomas era.

REDDIES REPORT
In front of the biggest home crowd of the season on Thursday, the Reddies defeated arch-rival Ouachita Baptist in thrilling fashion, 91-89. Ashley Farrar took over for Henderson on the evening, going for 25 points, five rebounds and five assists, marking the first 25-5-5 stat line an HSU player has produced since Pink Jones did it back on Dec. 18, 2018.

In the victory over the Tigers, Henderson shot 46.2% from the field and 47.1% from long range. The Reddies are 35th in the nation in field-goal percentage (44.7) and 15th in three-point field-goal percentage (36.7). To go along with the high efficiency marks, Henderson is fourth in the country in scoring offense (84.5 ppg).

The recent resurgence of senior guard Maci Mains has been a boost to an already potent Reddies offense. After being held under 10 points for the first 12 games, Mains has scored 22 and 12 points in back-to-back outings. The career 35% shooter is hovering around 40% from the field as well as from deep this season and is also leading the team with an 85% mark at the free-throw line.

The win over OBU pushed Henderson up a spot in the GAC rankings to third behind Southwestern Oklahoma St. (1) and Northwestern Oklahoma St. (2). With the Lady Rangers holding a half game lead over the Reddies and with three of the next four games at home, HSU will try to gain some ground on Northwestern, whose next three games are on the road.

In the season's first meeting between these two teams, Henderson held UAM to the fewest points ever scored against a Jill Thomas-led HSU team in a 75-39 rout. Gracie Raby led all scorers with 14 points while Karrington Whaley logged a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. The HSU defense held UAM to 7.7% (1-13) shooting from beyond-the-arc and 21.3% (13-61) from the field.

SCOUTING ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
It has been a struggle for head coach Markell Cox's second season at UAM as his girls are 0-15 overall and 0-9 in the GAC. Saturday will be the Blossoms' fifth home game, where they have lost every game by an average score of 78-56.

One bright spot for Arkansas-Monticello has been sophomore guard Taylor Flores, who is eighth in the league in scoring at 15.6 points per game. In the first meeting against HSU, however, Flores tied her lowest scoring output of the season with three points on 1-of-12 shooting.

Defensively, UAM is bolstered by 6'3" forward Trinity McDowell who, in only nine games of action and 11 minutes per contest, is averaging one block a game, including three rejections in the most recent game at Southern Arkansas.

What To Watch For…
-Karrington Whaley registered her eighth double-digit rebounding game this past Thursday, which puts her career total at 721. Currently with the fifth most rebounds in program history, Whaley needs nine on Saturday to pass Kathy Comeaux (729) for fourth all-time. She also needs just one more block to move into sixth all-time among the GAC's all-time blocks leaders.

-Ashley Farrar has scored 247 points so far this season as she is starting to move into the conversation of best scoring seasons in program history. With Kathy Comeaux having the tenth best single-season scoring mark of 500 points, Farrar needs to average 18.1 point per game the rest of the way with fourteen regular season contests remaining to catch Comeaux. Farrar is currently averaging 17.6 ppg.
