ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In the first match to kick off the 2022 spring season and the first match of the
Annabel Rowlands coaching era, the Henderson State women's tennis team handed Delta State its first loss of the season at the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center Friday afternoon, 4-3. Â
Â
Friday's win marks the fourth consecutive year HSU has won its season-opener. Last year, the Reddies defeated Southern Arkansas by the same score, 4-3, to open the 2020-21 campaign.
Â
Henderson began the opener winning the doubles point with the region's No. 10 doubles team
Mulan Kamoe and
Georjemah Row defeating Lady Statesmen Alena Macharova and Lavinia Horning, 6-2.
Â
Vinda Teally and newcomer Danna Nuñez clinched the doubles nod for the Reddies after defeating Adriana Subias and Maria Caride, 6-4, to deliver the early 1-0 lead.
Â
In singles, Kamoe, the 14th ranked singles player in the region, made quick work of Macharova for a second time in the match, giving HSU the first singles point, 6-2, 6-0. Next up to finish was
Tirzah Bailey, who was making her debut in the singles lineup, as she downed DSU's Horning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Â
With the Reddies holding a 3-0 lead in the match with one more point needed to clinch the match, the Lady Statesmen pulled wins from the Nos. 2, 4 and 6 spot to knot things up at 3-apiece.
Â
Henderson's No. 3 singles player
Erica Jaggernauth fell behind after the first set, 6-1, before mounting a furious comeback to win the second set, 7-5, before claiming the match-defining set, 6-4, over Sofia Pepe.
Â
Henderson St. (1-0) returns to the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center tomorrow at 1 p.m. to face the 15th ranked Angelo State Rambelles.
