Reddies Face Tech Friday, Senior Day on Saturday

GAME COVERAGE LINKS

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After locking up a spot in next week's GAC Tournament, Henderson State will head to Russellville, Arkansas, to face the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns Friday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. in what will be HSU's final road contest and second-to-last game of the regular season.

Henderson will then finish off their season with Senior Day inside the Duke Wells Center Saturday, Feb. 26 against the Harding Lady Bisons, with tip-off set for 3 p.m. as HSU will recognize seniors Lani Snowden and Karrington Whaley.

REDDIES REPORT
Henderson St. has completely turned the tides on its post-season fate after having won its last three games, two of which came against teams that the Reddies had lost to in the season's first go-around. This three-game winning streak has catapulted HSU from the seven seed and on the verge of getting knocked out, to currently sitting as the four seed in the GAC standings.

The Reddies' most recent victory came in Ada, Oklahoma, against East Central this past Saturday, 63-57. The win came just 48 hours after their comeback victory over Southeastern, 57-49. The 2-0 Oklahoma road trip is the first time HSU has gone 2-0 in the Sooner State in a single stint since the 2017-18 season.

In the course of this winning streak, Henderson has exercised high-octane offense and stingy defense when necessary. Against Northwestern, the HSU offense hung 87 points on the Lady Rangers, which is the fourth most points the Reddies have scored in a conference win this season. Against Southeastern and East Central, Henderson only allowed 49 and 57 points, respectively, which are the second and third fewest points allowed in a conference win this season.

While HSU has already clinched a spot in the 2022 Women's GAC Championships, there is still work to be done when it comes to claiming a top seed. The current fourth-seeded Reddies are 11-9 in league play along with fifth-place East Central and sixth-place Northwestern. Henderson finds itself just one game ahead of seventh-place Arkansas Tech when the two programs meet on Friday.

In the season's first meeting against ATU, Whaley's season-high 24 points helped lead HSU over the Golden Suns, 77-72, inside the Duke Wells Center back on Dec. 11. Despite Arkansas Tech shooting slightly over 50% from the field, Henderson outrebounded Tech, 40-29, and made seven more free-throws to warrant the five-point victory.

When Harding comes to Arkadelphia for Senior Day on Saturday, Henderson will be carrying a three-game winning streak over the Lady Bisons after defeating them in Searcy earlier this season, 82-78, after a trio of Reddies scored 20 or more points. The HSU defense locked down the perimeter that Saturday afternoon, holding Harding to 12.5% (2-16) from beyond the arc.

SCOUTING ARKANSAS TECH
The Golden Suns are one win away from clinching a spot in the 2022 GAC Women's Basketball Championships. Arkansas Tech has two-game cushion over ninth-place Southeastern Oklahoma State while currently siting as the seventh seed at 10-10, tied with Oklahoma Baptist as the last team in.

Tech has lost three of its last four games but has won four of its last five inside Tucker Coliseum. On the season, ATU is 9-3 at home compared to 4-7 on the road. The last time HSU defeated Arkansas Tech in Russellville was in 2018 when Maci Mains had 13 points while Snowden registered 10 points, including going 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

SCOUTING HARDING
Harding has already clinched a spot in next week's GAC Tournament, but is still vying for the number two seed in postseason play. As the current-number three seed, the Lady Bisons, at 13-7 in league play, sit one game back of second-place Southern Nazarene with two games remaining. Harding is scheduled to face Arkansas-Monticello in Searcy Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before coming to Arkadelphia.

As of Thursday, Feb. 24, HU is coming off back-to-back road losses against No. 20 Southwestern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State, 73-60 and 65-63, respectively. Despite the pair of losses away from Rhodes-Reaves Field House, the 17-8 Lady Bisons hold a winning record at home (9-2) as well as on the road (7-5).

What To Watch For…
-With two games remaining in her Henderson State career, Karrington Whaley has a chance to add to her already illustrious career. The current all-time blocks leader needs just one more block to have the fourth-most blocks in single-season history after already occupying the sixth and seventh single-season records.

-In addition to holding several blocking records, Whaley could become the programs all-time field-goal percentage leader as she currently holds a 59% career shooting percentage. The all-time record holder is Marchelle Bonner from 1994-96 with a 57.9 field-goal percentage.

-Sonni Martin has 92 assists this season. Tenth on the all-time single-season list is Regina Koonce with 99. Martin needs just eight more assists to move into tenth on the all-time single-season assists list.

-Ashley Farrar has posted her best free-throw shooting season, percentage wise, of her HSU career as she currently sits at 80% (96-120). For Farrar to crack the Top-10 of the best single-season free-throw shooting percentages, the junior from Green Forest, Arkansas, will have to go atleast 4-for-4 over the next two games or 8-of-9 at the worst to pass Maggie Sauls' tenth-place mark of 80.6%.
