CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas – Henderson State found its first win since the season opener, defeating the University of the Ozarks, 9-0. Each doubles match counted as a single point as opposed to having to win 2-of-3 doubles match to earn the solo doubles nod, allowing for the 9-point win.
Georjemah Row,
Vinda Teally and
Danna Nunez each claimed their first singles victory this season, with it being Nunez' first singles victory of her young HSU career. On the doubles side of things, duos Nunez and
Tirzah Bailey and
Erica Jaggernauth and
Vinda Teally saw their first victories as doubles partners.
The afternoon started with the Reddies just about sweeping all 24 games in doubles, with No. 20
Mulan Kamoe and Row taking their respective match at the one spot, 8-0, followed by Jaggernauth and Teally at the two by the same margin, before three's Bailey and Nunez won the final doubles match, 8-1, giving HSU the 3-0 lead on the overall match.
Singles went much the same way as doubles, with Row at No. 2 giving Henderson the first singles point, running through the Ozarks' Kaitlin Gutierrez, 6-0, 6-1. No. 1 Kamoe followed suit, downing Yadira Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0. With the Reddies already holding the 5-0 lead, the overall match was clinched, but Henderson was not finished.
Nos. 3-6 for HSU went on to allow only nine games combined as each individual won their respective singles matches in straight sets, putting the finishing touches on the sweep. Both Teally and Nunez matched Row's dominance with scoring 12 of the 13 games.
Henderson St. (2-5) takes to the road for a stretch, beginning with Christian Brothers Monday, Mar. 21 at 2 p.m. before facing Rhodes College a day later at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played in Memphis, Tennessee.
