RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas - Senior
Monica Monreal was named the GAC's Player of the Week after this past weekend's series against East Central, the league announced Monday. This is the first honor of Monreal's career and Henderson State softball's first time to have a player receive this recognition since March of 2020.
Monreal delivered one of the best weekends of her career and the best game of her career on senior day in the series finale against the Tigers. In the rubber match, the Ennis, Texas, native registered a three-run homer and then a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to send the game to extra innings. The five RBIs that resulted from the pair of home runs were a career high for Monreal.
For the weekend, the Ennis High School product went 5-for-8 at the dish with seven RBIs and three home runs, boasting an absurd 1.750 slugging percentage across the three games. The high-level play from the senior will continue to be needed as the 2022 regular season comes to a close.
"I could not be happier for [Monica], having that kind of performance in her final home games of her career," said head coach
David Martinez. "That type of showing from one of our veterans was huge for us, not just for that weekend, but as we begin our push for the GAC Tournament."
Henderson St. is currently one game out of the eighth spot in the conference standings with two weekend series' remaining. The first of those two league stands will be against Southeastern Oklahoma State April 22-23 in Durant, Oklahoma.
