Women’s Basketball Preps for Road Game at Delta State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State continues its run of road games to start the 2023-24 season as they travel to Cleveland, Miss. to take on Delta State. Tip-off for the game is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15 in the Walter Sillers Coliseum.
 
REDDIES REPORT
Henderson State opened the new campaign with the GAC/MIAA Conference Challenge, where the Reddies went 1-1 over the two days. In the season opener, HSU got off to a fast start, defeating Emporia State 80-67 for the programs first win over the Lady Hornets. In the following game, the red and gray fell to (RV) Missouri Southern 85-68.
 
Picking up where she left off a season ago, Ashley Farrar scored 41 points over the two contests, shooting 59.1 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the three-point line. Farrar's 41-point weekend puts her at 1419 career points, and she is now 228 points away from tying the all-time scorers record at Henderson State. Reddies' legend Lena Womack currently holds the top scorers honor with 1647 career points in 108 appearances.  
 
Newcomer Tori Gittens got off to a strong start in her debut for the Reddies as the Charleston Southern transfer combined for 37 points in the two games, scoring 18 versus Emporia State and 19 against Missouri Southern. Gittens saw the basket well in the win over ESU, going 8-8 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc. In her first collegiate start, Natalie Cardenas recorded 21 points and seven rebounds against the Lady Hornets and followed that up with seven points and an assist versus MSSU. 
 
Henderson State and Delta State will take the court against one another for the first time since 2011 in the 43rd meeting. The Lady Statesmen lead the head-to-head series 28-14 and have won the last three contests. HSU's most recent victory over DSU came in 2010 when the Reddies bested Delta State 68-55 in the Duke Wells Center.
 
SCOUTING DELTA STATE
Delta State enters the 2023-24 season under the leadership of second-year head coach Tracy Stewart-Lange, who finished 12-17 overall and 11-13 in the GSC in her first year. DSU opened the new campaign with back-to-back wins, beginning with a 56-43 win over LeMoyne-Owen College followed by a 55-49 victory against Lane College. 
 
The Lady Statesmen entered the year picked 6th in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Poll with their fourth, fifth and sixth top scorers returning from the 2022-23 season. Grace Watson leads the way among the returning trio, having scored 204 points last year and shot 45.6 percent from the field. Additionally, Watson was the second-best player at the glass for DSU with 156 rebounds, averaging 5.4 per game.
