ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State won its third consecutive match Sunday, pulling out a 4-3 upset of No. 33 Northeastern State at the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center. It is HSU's first three-match winning streak since the 2019-20 season.Â
With the match tied at 3-3, the nation's 49th ranked player
Mulan Kamoe defeated No. 9 Emilia Cosatto across three sets to claim the victory for the Reddies, marking their first victory over the Riverhawks since the 2012-13 season.
Kamoe and
Kristina Kozlova defeated NSU's top doubles team, 6-2, before
Haarini Balakrishnan and
Jenna Kate Bohnert claimed the doubles points for Henderson at the No. 2 line by the same score.
After the first two singles matches, Northeastern quickly took a 2-1 lead before Bohnert evened the match at two with her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. Both teams split the next two matches with both going three sets after
Marianna Murcia claimed the win at No. 3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to leave the deciding match at the top spot between both programs' top singles players.
Kamoe pulled out the hard-fought first set, 7-5, before the eighth-ranked Riverhawk took the second set, 6-1, to bring the defining singles match to a defining third set. The Nasoso Nadi, Fiji native dominated the third and final set, 6-2, to complete the upset.
Henderson (6-3) will go for win number four in a row when Emporia State comes to the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center Tuesday, Mar. 14 at 11 a.m.Â
