ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After a tough midweek loss, Henderson State will look to bounce back in a weekend series on the road at Southern Nazarene on Apr. 14-15 at Tere Webber Field. The opening pitch for game one of the series is set for 3 p.m. on Friday.
REDDIES REPORT
Henderson (17-23, 9-15) dropped a midweek contest to Ouachita Baptist 6-0 at Sully Anderson Field. HSU struggled in the circle, giving up three early runs in the first, and were forced to play from behind all game.
Katelyn McMahan and
Kaitlyn O'Quinn have seen the ball well at the plate lately, as both players have multi-hit games in their last two outings. O'Quinn now leads the team with 13 games with two or more hits and is batting a team-high .364 with 43 hits. In addition, the Coppell, Texas native leads the GAC in stolen bases (20) and has only been caught stealing twice this season.
This weekend's showdown in Bethany, Okla. is important for both HSU and SNU, as the two teams have nine wins in league play and are fighting for a spot in the GAC Tournament. The Reddies are one spot behind the Crimson Storm, who are in eighth with one less loss than HSU. Just ahead of the two sides are East Central and Arkansas-Monticello, with 11 GAC wins apiece.
Henderson trails SNU 20-19 in all-time meetings heading into the 40
th matchup between the two sides. Last season, the Reddies came back to win the final two games of the series against Southern Nazarene after SNU opened the weekend with a 5-3 victory.
Brooke Johnson went 5-9 at the dish with three RBIs and pitched 8.0 innings in game two and had seven strikeouts.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NAZARENE
The Crimson Storm (20-22, 9-14) fell in the midweek to No. 22 Oklahoma Baptist 7-6 in extra innings after SNU tied the game 6-6 late in the bottom of the seventh in a five-run frame. Southern Nazarene's last home series was against Southeastern Oklahoma State, who got the better of SNU, winning the series 2-1.
SNU's Hailey Evans is the Crimson Storms' most dangerous hitter with a team-high ten home runs, 39 runs batted in and is batting .326 this season. As a team, Southern Nazarene is hitting .289, led by Liana Heshiki, who is batting .406 on 52 hits. Heshiki's lone hit in the midweek against OKBU was a three-run triple late in the seventh inning.
Southern Nazarene ranks in the middle of the pack in pitching across the league with a 4.01 ERA. Leading the Crimson Storm in the circle is freshman pitcher Olivia Hernandez with a team-low 3.46 ERA and has 114 strikeouts in 85.0 innings of work. Opposing batters are hitting just .231 against Hernandez this season.
