RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - For the first time in the Great American Conference era, Henderson State women's tennis defeated Arkansas Tech. The Reddies came one point shy of blanking the Golden Suns as they took the non-conference road contest, 6-1.
After securing the doubles point, three of HSU's singles matches went all three sets, including two after a Reddie was down a set, before the red-and-gray clawed their way to victory.
Arkansas Tech opened play with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Mulan Kamoe and
Kristina Kozlova evened up doubles, 1-1, with a 6-3 victory over the ITA No. 44 doubles tandem.
Angela Georgieva and
Jenna Kate Bohnert followed that with a tough 7-6 win at the No. 2 line after taking the tiebreaker by force, 7-2, to improve to 5-3 on the season as a duo.
With Henderson taking the early 1-0 lead, Kamoe quickly put HSU ahead, 2-0, with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1 win against Tech's top player before the Golden Suns came right back with a win at No. 5 to bring the match back to 2-1.
Haarini Balakrishnan brought the Reddies within a point of making history with her own straight-set victory at No. 6 before Georgieva completed the historic milestone. After falling in the opening set, 6-1, the newcomer fought back with a second-set 6-3 in before taking the decided frame, 6-3.
With the match already in hand, Kozlova and Bohnert added to the victory with three-set wins of their own. Kozlova echoed Georgieva's performance, coming back from being a set down before dominating the final two stanzas, 6-1 a piece.
Henderson St. (6-3) will return to the Bettye Wallace Tennis Center Saturday, Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. when it shoots for its second consecutive victory against Northeastern State.
