RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — After a scorching hot week at the plate, Henderson State sophomore third baseman Hilary Akers was named GAC Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Akers, from Houston, Texas, was 11-for-19 (.579) in four games for the Reddies with four doubles, a home run, and 10 RBIs. Henderson went 3-1 on the week, which included a series sweep of Arkansas Tech for the first time in a decade.
In the second game of the series with the Golden Suns, Akers hit a game-tying three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep the Reddies alive. In extras, Akers delivered a walk-off single to lift HSU to a 4-3 win that clinched the series.
For the year, Akers is batting .389 with 51 hits, 14 doubles, five home runs and 36 RBIs.
Akers and the Reddies (20-19, 8-15) will look to stay hot tomorrow when they face rival Ouachita Baptist across the street at 6 p.m.
