Melvin Haynes' three-point field-goal with 4 seconds left in the game lifted Henderson State to a 70-67 win over Union University, Saturday in Jackson, Tenn.
Trailing 67-65 with 1:04 left to play,
Andrew Ensley tied the game with a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left on the clock. The Reddie defense then forced a Bulldog turnover to set up Haynes' heroics.
Henderson State, 7-2 on the season, built a 22-13 lead midway through the first-half as the Reddies went on an 11-2 run.
Union, however, then went on a 11-0 run sparked by the play of Paul Valdor who scored seven of his 9 points during the 3-minute spurt to give the Bulldogs a 24-22 advantage.
The teams traded baskets the remainder of the half before Henderson's
Joe McCoy tied the game at 35-35 just before the end of the half.
The two teams exchanged leads eight times in the second-half before Union took a 65-60 lead with 2:52 to play in the game.
The Reddies rallied back as McCoy hit another jumper with just over two-minutes remaining followed by a mid-range bucket and a free throw by
Denzel Lyles to tie the score at 65-65 with 1:37 left in the game.
Union, 2-7 on the season, regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Anthony Freeman before Henderson's run in the final 48 seconds to win the game.
Four Reddies scored in double-figures led by Lyles' 20 points. Peri James followed with 13 points while Haynes scored 11 points with Ensley totaling 10 points.
Freeman led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Pedro Faller scored 14 points.
Henderson State attempted just 49 field goals converting 24 times for 49 percent shooting from the floor. Union launched 70 shots, making just 25 field goals for 36 percent.
Union dominated the boards outrebounding the Reddies 43 to 33. The Bulldogs scored 22 second-chance points while the Reddies had just 2.
Henderson State will next travel to Stephenville, Texas on Tuesday to take on Tarleton State with tip-off set for 8 p.m.
