DURANT, Okla. – The Henderson State University women's basketball team (2-2, 0-1 GAC) dropped its first Great American Conference game as the Lady Reddies fell to Southeastern Oklahoma State University (3-1, 1-0 GAC), 78-62, Thursday evening in the Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
HSU only shot 33.9 percent from the field, and was outrebounded, 53-47, for its second road loss. Junior
Aungelique Sledge (West Helena, Ark.) was the top offensive performer for the Lady Reddies, totaling 15 points, nine coming from behind the arc. Defensively, sophomore
Dulincia Keener (Texarkana, Ark.) pulled down 12 rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
Tiara Davis (So., Longview, Texas) was HSU's top scorer off the bench, adding nine points, six rebounds and one block.
Southeastern Oklahoma State was led by Haley Schaefer, who came off the bench and scored a game-high in points (16) and rebounds (13).
The first half for the Lady Reddies was led by Sledge who paced HSU with 11 points, adding three 3-pointers.
Jalisa Benjamin (So., Sand Springs, Okla.) grabbed seven boards in the first 20 minutes, while Sledge followed with five.
The first couple possessions of the game were back-and-forth. Southeastern Oklahoma scored on their opening drive by a jumper by Emily Williams.
Taylor Washington (Fr., Arlington, Texas) turned right around and answered with a jumper of her own to even the game. Williams again scored for SOSU and
Krystal Beachum (Sr., Mexia, Texas) laid it in on her end at the game was deadlocked 4-4, only one minute into the game.
As the Savage Storm took an 11-9 lead at the 15:45 mark, the game remained that score for over four minutes until Davis made a nice move the paint to tie the game for the fourth time with 11:05 left in the first half.
Southeastern Oklahoma State made the next four baskets and extended its lead to eight. Only down by one with less than 10 seconds, SOSU hit four free throws and take a five point lead into the locker room, 31-26.
The second half was an unsuccessful comeback from HSU. The Lady Reddies pulled within six early on but the Savage Storm pulled ahead, utilizing 17 bench points and numerous turnovers by Henderson State, as HSU was down by double-digits.
The Lady Reddies will stay on the road as they will battle East Central University in a conference matchup on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Ada, Okla.
