Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Lyon, 68-55

Aungelique Sledge Etches Name Into Record Book

Box Score

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Breaking from conference action, the Henderson State University women's basketball team (4-2) strolled past Lyon College (3-3), 68-55, Tuesday evening in the Becknell Gymnasium.

Averaging over 27 points in the last three games, Aungelique Sledge topped her previous career-high of 33 points, which she set against East Central on Saturday with a 34-point performance against Lyon College. The junior shot 11-for-19, while tying HSU's record for most 3-pointer made in a game with seven. The guard from West Helena, Ark. etched her name in the record books alongside Linda Johnson (vs. Texas College, 12/2/1996) and Ragina Koonce (vs. UA-Puerto Rico, 11/30/2000).

Overall the Lady Reddies shot 43 percent and HSU's defense held the Fighting Scots to 33 percent. Behind the arc, HSU hit 46 percent, 21 over their season average totaling 10 in the game.

The first five minutes were a back-and-forth battle as Lyon jumped on the board first with Alex Davison hitting a shot in the paint. Nearly two minutes later, Sledge drained a three as Henderson State took its first lead. The Fighting Scots answered immediately scoring on their next possession. Jalisa Benjamin (So., Sand Springs, Okla.) pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back up to even the game up at 5-5 with 16:08 left.

It wasn't until Sledge received a dish from Krystal Beachum (Sr., Mexia, Texas) to hit a jumper in the paint that HSU took a lead and kept it for the entire game.

In the first half, the Lady Reddies reached a double-digit lead on two occasions, first when Vanessa Pieper (Jr., Warren, Ark.) scored at the 5:57 mark to make it 24-14 and then when Beachum stole the ball from Taylor Grigg and laid it in on the other end to make it 26-16.

Henderson State took a six-point lead, 27-21, after 20 minutes of play, only shooting a mere 33 percent, into the locker room.

Although Pieper opened up the half with a three, Lyon immediately cut HSU's lead to two, scoring seven straight points.

Beginning at the 12:56 mark, HSU strung together 10 straight points in 1:54 to go ahead 46-32. With a little over five minutes remaining, the Lady Reddies saw its biggest lead as Sledge once again made a field goal and Henderson State was up by 16, 57-41.

Both Pieper and Beachum finished with eight points apiece, while Benjamin added six to lead the Lady Reddies. Carina Jackson was the Scots top scorer with 21.

Closing out with its third double-digit win of the season, Henderson State will have over a week break before hosting Arkansas-Monticello in a conference matchup on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
