Henderson State's shooting struggles continued as the Lady Reddies lost in overtime 70-63 to Northwestern Oklahoma, Saturday in Alva, Okla.
For the second consecutive game, Henderson State struggled from the field converting on just 20-of-56 shots for 35 percent.
Henderson State, 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the Great American Conference, held a 56-53 lead with 21 seconds remaining in regulation following a pair of free throws by
Vanessa Pieper.
The Lady Reddie defense made things difficult for Northwestern Oklahoma, but Relina Johnson threw up a desperation 3-point shot from 28-feet to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Northwestern Oklahoma jumped out to a 61-56 advantage two minutes into the 5-minute stanza.
Henderson State, having to play without the services of
Dulincia Keener,
Krystal Beachum, and
Jasmine Settles who all fouled out of the game, attempted to rally with the help of a pair of layups by
Aungelique Sledge.
However, the Rangers made 9-of-12 free throws in the final 3 minutes to hold on for the win.
Despite shooting just 31 percent from the field, the Rangers were dominant on the offensive boards. NWOSU grabbed a total of 48 rebounds, including 24 offensively resulting in 17 second-chance points.
Northwestern Oklahoma took advantage of the home court advantage as Henderson State was whistled for 30 fouls while the Rangers committed just 19 infractions. The Rangers converted on 21-of-32 free throws while Henderson was 17-of-24 from the charity stripe.
Sledge ended the game with 20 points to lead the Lady Reddies, while Pieper and Beachum both scored 12 points each.
Kamera Bozeman led Northwestern Oklahoma with a game-high 21 points.
The Lady Reddies return home to face Southern Arkansas on Tuesday with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
