HSU Softball Takes Two from SWOSU

Henderson State won its seventh straight home game as the Lady Reddies swept a double-header from Southwestern Oklahoma, Friday at Dee White Field.

The Lady Reddies opened with a 7-2 win and ended the day with a 6-3 victory to improve to 13-12 overall and 9-5 in the Great American Conference.

Sarah Gipson put Henderson State on the board in the first-inning of the opener with a single to score Tricia Hock who reached on an error.

The Lady Reddies added three runs in the second as Kayla Williams hit a two-out double to score Keirsten Seahorn and Amy Halter. Seahorn reached on a walk followed by Halter getting on base by way of an error.

Hock them made the score 4-0 as she drove in Williams with a single of her own.
Henderson State stretched its lead to 7-0 in the fifth-inning as Hock and Amber Klug both singled to begin the frame.

Klug's base-hit drove in Hock as she advanced on a stolen base and passed ball during Klug's at bat.

Gipson then reached on an error advancing Klug. Klug later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan South with Gipson scoring on another SWOSU error.

The Bulldogs managed to score a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to end Williams' shutout bid.

Williams, however, recorded a complete-game win as she struck out three batters and gave up seven hits in improving to 5-6 on the year.

In game two, Henderson State manufactured a pair of runs in the first-inning with the help of a wild pitch and singles by Williams and Ashlyn White to take a 2-1 lead.

A three-run third –inning made the score 5-1 as Gibson doubled down the left field line to drive in a run followed by an Alicia Zack double to plate two more runs.

In the HSU fifth, Klug walked and advanced to second on Gipson's third hit of the day. After South walked to load the bases, Klug scored on a sacrifice fly by Zack for Henderson's final run.

SWOSU scored two runs in the sixth-inning, but Ashlyn White entered the game for HSU starting pitcher Cagen Medlock and retired five straight batters including three on strike outs to record her third save. Medlock gave up five hits and struck out five batters to record the win and improve to 4-2 on the year.

Williams and Gipson led Henderson State with three hits each with Williams having a double and two RBI, while Gipson also had a double and three runs batted in.

The two teams will finish the series with a double-header on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at Dee White Field. The games were moved up an hour due to possible heavy rains forecast for Saturday afternoon.
